I have the book "treekiller" ordered....I studied as did Denny...
When you have "surge" now with the air horn adjusted it is now fuel related ....Too lean or rich? check the plugs....what color are they...also check fuel flow ...make sure your getting enough...Q-jets sip gas till you plant it to the wood then it's like flushing a toilet! need to know where you are in mixture before we get into rod numbers and sizes...

Lets also not forget the prones of the Q-jet....
1) Take off the air cleaner and stand over the carb and actuate the rear air door open and closed. As you are doing so pay close attention to the rod hanger that pulls the rods out of the secondary jets...You'll want to make sure that both rods are hanging on the hanger.....
They are prone to fall off if the hook isn't fully bent.
2) secondary emulsion tubes....These are prone to fall out! usually just one side and will run with surge like symtoms just like a fallen rod... Fixing will require pulling the top off the carb....
Listen to the engine when it's doing what is doing. It will tell you wether it's lean or rich...
If it seem to run smooth while surging and pulling then not pulling.....It's lean
If it's crakle-ing while surging and not pulling.....it's rich....
It is very important to have adequate fuel pressure at all rpm's when you tip open the secondaries on a Q-jet....
Later one if you still have trouble we may have you pull the rod&hanger and list what is on the rods and hanger.....
Funny thing...Did you know they actually put Q-jet on early Mustangs....I beleive the 67-69 427-429 units....I have one is how I found out....It should be listed in your book Denny....

thanks abunch for the help you guys gave me on the QJ, but i have it boxed up ready to ship off. have you ever been to the point that you soo sick of somthing that you cant stand to touch it any more? that the way i feel about my carb. another reason i'm sending it of is because this place replates the carb in the proper gold and silvers and my carb was the uglyest thing left in the engine bay. when its running again i will have to give more info on the fuel pressure and the timming curve just to get it all perfect. i wish i knew and was as comfortable working on carbs as you guys but i only have one vehicle with a carb anymore so my experimenting with them is very limited. i'll give you an update when its back on how its running. ( it probably wont be any different because my timing and fuel pressure is screwed up and not the carb )Seth
