quadra jet help
is there any one anywhere that can dial in a quadra jet carb good for me. its off of a 77 T/A and i go through this every year. i am soo sick of beating the crap out of the thing trying to get the four barrels set right and the thing just plain leaves alot to be desired all around. i really am thinking that it is warped also.i have put kits in it before but i really dont know how to tune it good. i thought about a new carb but i would sooner spend the bucks on this carb to keep the car original.Seth

Jet chip or edelbrock can if you want to send it to them but, it will cost you some coin! I do all mine. I have a shelf full of them probably 200 or so.... There is a book on how to rebuild and modify a Q-jet and it has all the in's and out's of one....
In order to make a Q-jet fully perform for you, you have to understand exactly how they were designed and operate because of there tempormental nature....
1st of all if you haven't already done it. Pull the rod off the air horn that goes to the choke pull-off....Get a allen wrench and a screw drive and set the air-horn via road testing.....

first thanks ls1s10, glad to see you back, i think i'll send it to a link on the car craft site it showed.
Dr Bowtie- thats my biggest problem, i dont know exactly how everything works in them and i am throwing in the towel
messing with the air horns was my first mistake i feel i just cant seem to get it right. i messed with them the first time because when i got it , it was a dog and i was told to adjust the air horns. well after i screwed them up i found that the advance in the dist was gummed up solid from years of sitting around. i fixed that and have been fighting everything i touched on the carb ever sinceSeth

heres the carb numbers 17057263 0637 ARL
i was warming it up to change the oil and when i put her to the wood it said blaaaaaaaa. i was reminded that the 4 brls were opening up way too fast.
the car is slightly cammed, i dont remember size and the compression has been bumped up to 9.5:1 if that matters. thanks for any help.
also, do you have any idea what the total timing should be on this thing or what springs in the dist for the advance curve? its a 4 speed with 3.23 gear and it runs about 2,700 at 60mph if i remember right, and if it matters.Last edited by 53 Chevy5; 04-27-2005 at 07:39 PM.

ok, i got the oil in and adjusted the secondaries screw to 5/8 now heres the symtoms. in 4th gear punching it at 60 they sound real nice pulling hard maybe a little on and off hesitation. if i'm given it the cranberrys from 1st on up i can hear the secondaries are trying to open but it surges pretty noticeably, its like its saying give me more fuel, thanks now give me more again. at one time i could get some second gear rubber out of this thing not now.
by the way i forgot how cool this thing sounds idleing, rumpity tump tump, potatoe potatoe potatoeSeth

ya thats kinda what i thought too but i thought that would be too simple for me, got side tracked and didnt get to do that yet. one other thing i was looking at was the 2" exaust coming off the manifold and where it bends to a 90 it looks like theres no way all that exaust could go through there. i know that isnt my main problem but would i gain much from putting 2 1/4 exaust on from the manifolds to the mufflers, there is already 2 1/4 from the mufflers back. i knowi'm talking like an idiot who doesnt know anything, but i think i actually dont know as much as i think i do after being on this site for awhile .Seth

well i adjusted the air horns back and forth a little and it still has the surging thing going on, worse when the horns are tightend and better when thier loose it never comes completly out of it and when i adjust them any looser then im into the bog range. i've never paid any one to work on anything of mine before but i am really looking forward to getting the bill from the carb shop after i send this thing off .
ps. hey Denny, do ya think a Ford motor would helpSeth
