256cid - 4 Barrel Carb Help!!
I know I am all over the palce but I am desperate. I spent the entire morning 2 blocks from my house trying to get the car running again. ...Needless to say I had to call a freind and get towed. I took the Carborator apart to see if the jets were clogged because, they would just spit small amounts of fuel and then stop all together once car started for about 3 seconds.
What is going on??? Any suggestions???
Please help!!

Probably dirt or other foreign debris in the fuel system. I know you don't want to hear this, but on a car this age, I would start by dropping the tank and cleaning it out thoroughly, then replace all the non-metallic lines and all filters.
A large radiator repair shop can boil it out for you. If there's still rust in it after that, a 50-50 mix of swimming pool acid and water sloshed around in it will cut the rust.Last edited by techinspector1; 05-03-2005 at 02:04 PM.

256cid - 4 Barrel Carb Help!!
Tank has been cleaned and all filters are running clean and have been replaced. The fuel looks clean and lines are new...So what then??? Fuel filter....has an arrow on it, should it point toward the direction the fuel is going or does it not matter????

Yes it should point in the direction the fuel is going. But if it has been pointing in the wrong direction with motor running, you should put on a new filter, in the right direction. Could also be the fuel pump, but sounds like dirty carb.Last edited by 46yblock; 05-03-2005 at 03:13 PM.

I replaced the fuel pump ...that is new, the fuel filter is also new. And the carb I took apart and cleaned, the gasket was worn and breaking apart inside, (in the middle) so I cleaned and blew on all injectors? The little pipe like bars in the middle. No debris... Gasket is intact on the outside but in the middle it is gone. There is fuel in the top and the float is in the mid section.
Should I get a new fuel filter or should I just reverse the arrow???
Thank you for all your help!

1) first make sure you are getting fuel....discontect the fuel line and put it in a bucket/jar ....crank the engine. You should get a cup to a cup and a half in 3 revolutions of the motor.
If you have to...rebuild the carb....get a kit and about 4 cans of Gummout carb spray....tear it down (remember where it all goes) spray heck out of everything.... Even all the little passages....then blow out with compressed air....put it all together
Thank you Roger. .
