Unbelievable.

Pull the covers and check valve action. Pay attention to the pushrods, a bent one will do the same thing as a flat cam lobe. I've seen smallblocks that just popped a pushrod out of place, too. Common in engines that don't get revved much, then get gunned. Probably a valve sticks a bit, opening up the clearances enough for the pushrod to pop out. Worth a look, anyway. Unfortunately, it probably is a worn cam.

if a valve is just sticking or if a rod is bent how do you fix a sticky valve or a bent rod?

If you sell it to the guy be honest. After all your going to be in the market for a car yourself......Would hate for someone to do that to me. So dont do it to him. The guy may just be wanting the body and is planning on changing the engine or going through it. Tell him what is up with it and it may not make a difference at all to him.

I'd try new plugs and wires first. If it is the cam, they'll work ion the new mill.
