I Am Going To Kill Myself
ok please anyone that can help me needs to....i have a 454 4 bolt block that is 60 over with low commpression slugs and a stock cam. Stock hiperfpass heads that have seen NO work other than new springs and rockers (they are oval ports). the dist. is a summit brand hei, a 2.0 edelbrock intake, 750 demon carb, taylor wires. ok now for the problem....i did a few pulled against a freinds LS1 camaro and on the last one i backfired threw the carb....she ran really bad the whole way home....so the first thing i did was replace the power valve. went down the street and nothing changed. so i come back and hit it with the timing light and the timing is right on. so i rebuild the carb...still no change. then i start pulling plugs and every one is fouled...so new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, pcv valve.....go down the street backfireing and almost dieing...comke home and the plugs are soaked from my 2 minute venture down the street....its not gas on the plugs though...it doesnt seem to be oil but it doesnt seem to be anti-freeze...i KNOW it has to be one of the 2 though. so all i can think of know is a flat cam or burt valves....did a compression test and the compression is good...great actually considering the mileage. so know i am faced with pulling a head....but why is every plug wet after just running for seconds....but i am not running rich with a new carburetor tuned correctly... maybe a bad ring? but wouldnt that show weak commpression on that cylinder?.....so hit me with your ideas of whats wrong....because i am going crazy trying to find out what is wrong

thanx for the help
thanx guys that is one area i havent thought of.... i was wondering if the edelbrock 2.0 might have anything to do with it...i noticed that it covers the back 2 water jackets on the heads...it completely blocks them off...i called edelbrock and they said every intake they produce blocks those water jackets off...i have never had a cooling problem so i thought everything was ok...but if it is a valve guide i guess i can dismiss the intake idea......whats are some visual inspections that i can make to determine if the guides are bad?.....the only thing is that all 8 plugs are wet after just minutes of running, could just one bad guide cause this?...or are all the guides and maybe valves bad? again i appriciate(yeah i know bad spelling....its late) all the help

Gee Streets I never ate any brass so I don't know what it tastes like. But the green hydraulic fluid tastes like chicken.

I'd say see wot the fluid is.
Smell like gas?
Thick like oil?
Tastes like ethlyne glycol? (Just kidding)
I'd look down the carb n see if it's flooding first.
You can do a coolant pressure test if you have the pump for it. That'll tell you if your loosing coolant. And for external you can see where.
If it's ending up in the oil pan or cylinder then I don't need to tell you what to do.Got lots of chrome,
It's good for show,
But when I hit the gas,
The pig won't go!

It would be interesting to know the outcome of this one after all this time... I had a Chevy one time that started running really crappy all of a sudden. I tried everything I could think of to no avail (new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filters, checked the pump for pressure, tested all ignition connections). Finally, I started changing things. I switched carbs with one that I knew was running good and even installed a new fuel pump even though the original showed good pressure. Finally, I swapped distributors (HEI) with a spare one I had and BINGO! Problem solved! As it turned out, when I took the old distributor apart, I found the little black wire from the reluctor was ready to break off and was only making intermittent contact... Just a year or so later I hitched my El Camino up to my race car, backed the whole rig up to my garage and shut it off. When I came back a while later to leave for the track, the El Camino wouldn't start! I screwed around with it for an hour or so; finally gave up any hope of making to the track that night. I just left it there until the next morning. Turned out it had the same problem - the reluctor wire was broke off. I'm sure glad it did it at home and not at the track...
Hey, does anybody know what Streets did to get kicked off this site? He was a caustic old fart, but always entertaining. I have often wondered if he lurks here sometimes under a different name...Jim

Wow 2003
I guess I did leave you guys hanging on this. Life has had me very busy.
Well here is the summary:
-I remember popping the heads off and seeing some nicely burnt valves. Machine shop eventually told me the Valve seat was destroyed, and valve guides were wiped.
-Slugs 5 and 7 had impact "scuffs" on the top....strange that I never heard or felt this happen. Maybe reused pistons? (I had bought someone elses motor, HUGE MISTAKE....will never do that again)
-So I found some 781's that had never been worked over. New everything and a clean up. The heads just didnt work with the puny cam. When I bought that disaster of a motor in 2003, I was told they were decent heads (This was my first big block, and like a MORON I didnt even bother to get educated. Plus I was buying from a "friend")
-So I pull the 781's and sell them off for what I paid for the whole motor!!!!
-Winter 2004 I yank the motor and take the block to a REAL FRIEND and started the cutting.
-Almost 4 years later I have a 496 roller motor with ProTopline heads, 294H Comp making the idle choppy, Forged everything.......the list goes on and on. Awsome street motor. And have never had a problem since. Still no leak down after all this time. Of course I have become a lot smarter about spinning wrenches also.
I built this motor to handle a 300 shot of juice (It will never see that)
As of now this motor is in my 73 Z28. 3800lbs. 116 mixed with 93 from the pump. No hose or other power adder.Just motor. 560hp/602tq....I still havent slapped her on a chassis dyno, but I really dont care to. It gets driven daily and raced on the weekends. The trailor is there only for break downs, and to lug around slicks and tools.
Thanks to everyone that has helped me through this old nightmare, and some of my other 496 questions from this same time frame. I know there has been some sort of drama about Streets.....but I am forever in debt to him. Again thank to everyoneI love to stroker

It's strange you got good compression test readings with all that was wrong.
