    Help

I have an 85 5.0 lx coupe i'm running a MSD 6AL box with a 7000 limiter, so that i can shift at 6500. But my stock igintion box is limiting the engine at 5500 rpm. The coil is wired directly to the MSD box (orange and black), the distributor is wired only to the MSD box(I forgot what color the wires were but it is the duraspark without the trigger wire [white]). The switched ignition wire(red) is routed through a switch in the cab . How is my stock ignition box limiting my engine? Appreciate the help!!!

How are you able to run two ignition modules? Stock and the MSD 6AL?

that's the problem exactly....I'm not. The engine is run completely by the MSD box. distributor, coil, and ran through a dedicated switch. The stock box is disconnected completely.

Ok, let me get this straight. You have tried two different setups, MSD and your stock ignition. When you run on the MSD setup, it runs fine, above 5500 RPM? When you run on the stock ignition, it won't go above 5500? Correct?

No.....the stock box is not in the picture at all, I think. I never tried to hit the "stock" rev limiter before. Now that I have installed the MSD box, and put the 7000 pill in it (limiter), it still is limited at 5500. I was just wondering if there was anywhere else that the stock box is hooked up to that I could have missed. Sorry for being unclear.....this was a bad day at the dyno.

What rpm's were you hitting with the stock box when it was hooked up, or did you try it with that box?

What other mods have you done to the engine?

Does it hit 5500 and stay there or does the engine rpms gradually back off once you hit 5500?

If you have a pack of those RPM MSD "pills" try putting another one in there and see what that does. However, I know from experience, once you bounce off that rev limiter you sure as heck will know it. It will sequentially drop the spark on cylinders and you will get noticable backfiring and surging

found out that the valves were floating. once I put my 3000 pill in the box and felt what that limiter was like......it definently wasn't that!!!!!!! Thanks for the help anyway.

That rev limiter really wakes you up, doesn't it!?

    Glad you found the problem.
