Carter Carb
i have a carter carburetor and i have no way to see what isze it is or anything like that, the thing boggs really really bad when i first give it gas, i can't get it to stay started when i put it in gear the only way i have been able to keep it going it to advance the timming so much that when i punch it i hear pinging, now from what i know tha pinging is from the pistons not being all the way up when it sparks so it pings for some reason, it is most likley bad for the engine but i will have to have it like that for a little while while i take it to get new parts and new tires, but i really need help to get it to work properly, so if anyone has had experience with this stuff before please help.
thank you

I'd guess that the primary float is out of adjustment and the accelerator pump is off. If I remember correctly there are some numbers stamped into the air horn or on the main body. If you can find them I have some old manuals and I'll try to find some settings for you.Ken Thomas

The metering rods basically control the fuel flow through the jets at idle and come in more sizes than I can remember. They are mounted on a spring loaded arm above the jets. If you could post a picture if the carb it would help. I've messed with a few AFB's and it's my understanding that Thermo Quads aren't much different. Edelbrock bought out Carter a few years back and their carbs are updated AFB's.Ken Thomas

No, just the carb. As far as your second statement, iin their day they were performance carbs. They didn't suffer the power valve problems that all early Holley's have, but IMHO they are harder to tune.Ken Thomas

Is there a way you can make a deal with one of your buddies to bolt on one of their "known-good" carbs so you can make sure it is a carb problem? If it won't stay running in gear, it could be a vacuum leak problem.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.
