    283 chokes up. Y?

I have a 283, with a 2 barrel carb on top. The engine was running great, and one day it just started running like crap. The problem is that when I jump on the gas in first gear it rev's up to about 3 1/2 and chokes up, Starts back fireing and just dosen't wanna go....same thing in second and third gear too, just different tach readings. If I rev it up slowly I can take it to any RPM but only if I'm realy patient. What could cause this? and how can i fix it?

sounds like spark or fuel..i'd start with spark.
check vacuum advance and mechanical advance in dist (put a timing light on teh engien and rev it and you can see the timing mark advance. it helps if you paint the mark on the balancer white or orange (nailpolish works)) It should advance..

disconnect and plug the vac line to dist, and repeat. it shoud advance, but not as far.

then, check points (gap) or better yet dwell angle.

Does it miss at all or jut not rev?

Possible the accelerator pump in carb is kaput - with engine off, remove air cleaner, look down carb throat and pump carb linkage - it should squirt gas down the carb throat.

    Other possibilities...
    plugs
    wires
    coil
    fule pump
plugged exhaust (as in cat converter, but you prolly don't have that)

Moisture in the cap or a cracked cap can also be the cause these symptoms.
