    383 Chevy motor

OK, I have a 383 Chevy motor in my 38. I need to know where to set the timing on this motor. Is it the same as a 350 or different? I have a lot of pinging and just can't seem to get it to go away.Even with high test gas.It also has no power. It's really hard to see the marks due to the power steering pump being in the way. If anyone knows about where it should be set please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think you need 10-11 degrees advance at idle (800-1000 rpm) and 32-34 degrees all in at 3,000 rpm. No more than 34 degrees I've heard as HP will drop .....

Are you pinging with race gas (like 104 octane)?

Thanks, I will look into the vacuum and the timing.I think I have the timing set at 8 degrees advance. It is a real pain to see the timing marks with the steering pump in the way. Thanks again!
