Thread: won't idle

This thing is pissing me off. It seemed better when I tried setting the idle mixture. It didn't move a whole lot off the PCV vac line but it moved some. It seemed like it was either lean or the timing was advanced as if I stepped into part throttle around the neighbourhood the valves clattered. I tried retarding the timing a little bit but maybe the idle circuit is still plugged a little bit. It would stall if I went into part throttle. Maybe the gas is old and I need to put some fresh in. It has been colder here and this truck has never liked the cold but I've never had to wait 3 minutes to get it to not die when put in gear.

It seems to be better now. I was reading vacuum through a "T" on the line from the front of the carb to the pcv valve. Wasn't reading much vacuum until I pulled the line on the "T" going to the PCV and put my finger over the hole. Then it started reading A LOT better. I tried moving the screws in and out and it had some effect. I put some fresh gas in it. I have accell superstock plug wires that have been on there for probably at least 3 years. Would changing those to say Moroso be a really good idea?
It still seems lean as it hesitates when I accelerate, and I get the valves rattling. I thought pulling the vaccuum advance to you retards and towards the cab advances? It's an SBC.
Thank you Roger. .
