    Accel....erate?

    Hiya Hot Doggers,

Now, what's the low-down on bolt on ignition parts such as what Accel offers?

Ignition modules, caps, rotors, coils, wires, plugs.

Is any or all a good investment?

Do they out perform the competition?

Take the ignition module. Now, that either works or it dont right?
What advantage does Accel's ignition module have to offer besides a yellow sticker and a 50$ price tag?

Cap and rotor. Now what advantage are they to another part of equal quality?

Now I did pay the 45$ for the plugs just because they looked pretty an you can see em under the boots.

I suppose buying a whole distributor from em might be a plus BUT who can afford that anyway? An that's only cause the part would be new.

As long as your getting a blue-white spark you're good to go right?

Sure they make good stuff. So doeas MSD and Mallory to name a few. For the budget conscious though a good working factory HEI will do just fine as well. At the very least lose the points and use a high voltage coil.

I've run everything from Accel dual point distributors to their Super Coils and replacement caps/rotors/etc. No real complaints. I have also used similar Mallory parts and find them to be fine too.

Probably just boils down to brand loyalty. I have Accel stuff on my '27 and my Jeep truck, and Mallory stuff on my T, so I haven't chosen one over the other due to any noteworthy performance gains or losses.

Now, would changing the coil on a factory HEI be an investment or a waste?

Last car I had points on was a 1966 Olds Delta 88.

Wish I still had it too.

Kind of depends on the usage.... Extra voltage at the plugs really has no bad to it... Keeps the fire going in the cylinders.... Never have really studied the aftermarket hei coils, not sure how much more output voltage they have vs. the stock coils...

I've had Accel in the past and no problems there. For a while now I have been using a Pertronix distributor and coil plus an MSD ignition on my 57 Olds. The 34 has a standard GM Hei with coil. Both have been trouble free.

Ther are a few companies that make new racing H.E.I. dist. that sell for about $150 and will work to about 7,500 rpms.

i have run a lot of different things, seeing that half my income is buying cars fixing them up and selling them.... the accell parts are so so, its been hit and miss with them sometimes they work great and dont break, sometimes they never work, and sometimes they work for a little while a break... they're got a decent warranty though and generally break in the warranty time..... the pertronix units work very nicely.... i've used them quite a few times as well.... keeps your distributor looking stock but and they function well.... either kit works great... the pertronix is a little more expensive, but a lot easier to install and has a lifetime warranty instead of a 1 year
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
