ok so I fabed up some exhaust out of two glass packs. the car ran great off the headers no smoke I get the exhaust on an it starts running like crap. I think the carb is just too big still no matter how lean it is its still rich with a 61 primary an a 83 secondary . at full throttle the thing comes right to life. but if you hold the throttle at like 2500 RPM it just spits sputters an miss fires. so Im going to try the 650 spread bore holley that i have. Im hoping smaller carb = less fuel = runns better. with the headers off It was decent on gas. the second I put the exhaust pipes on it started swallowing gas. like crazy just ideling 2 gallons in 10 minutes. all well same story difrent day I try the new carb tomorrow.

almost sounds like something is restricting the exhaust flow, how small are your headers? how big is your collector how big is your exhaust.

Its 2 1/2 inch all around. The headers are standard size an made for a big block. the heads are just the peanut port heads from a pick up truck. but its 2 1/2 inches. there is maybe at the most only 2 feet of exhaust after the header. the pipe off the header on both sides do pull a 90 degree bend but other then that its all wide open. I think the glass pack reduced to 2 inches. but that is plenty of flow now. no more 2 in to one kinda thing. this should be breathing great. I just rebuilt my holley 650 spreadbore. an I have a almost new quadrajet so im gonna try these cause the exhaust was super rich with the 850 with the exhaust on it. so I think a smaller carb will work. an a couple of people have told me that the 650 quadrajet is a perfect carb for a big block too so im about to find out if you know what i mean LOL. I will find out this weekend.

Can you try your buddies carb on it again and see if it runs right now.
Sounds like you still have carb issues to me. But if it does not run
right with it on there something else is wrong.
But I think you'll find it runs good again and your problem is with the carb.

yea I still have my buddies carb. that was the carb i was using when I put the glass packs on. I said its running great with this carb lets get some glass packs on it to see how noisie its going to be an what not. the second i put the pipes on an there pretty much just straight pipes not much has changed in restriction it started running crappy. it idols alright an when its right to the floor it just insane but at a steady RPM it spits an sputters an what not. an now with the exhaust on it its running really rich again it makes no sences cause there really is no restriction in the exhaust its like literaly 2 feet. Its just a set of glass packs right off the headers. each on of the headers has a glass pack an that is it. its wide open.

I'm probably like half the other guys on here and wish I was not so far away so I could come over and look at it for my self. It's hard to tell what is going on with out being there to look at it for your self. Though there are many more guys on here that could help or tell alot better what the problem is. But it does have me curios now anyway.
And I sure would like to see that thing tearing up the asphalt.

what kind of headers fit around the transaxle?
I have the same setup but don't see nearly
enough room for anything but 1 pipe on the right side
especially?

i do not see how you are geting any air to feed any size carb .i bet its a big dead spot back there were there is no air to feed a bbc ??????????Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

actually the fiero aerodymanics have a huge amount of air swirling around back there, hence the cooling vents they put there. i own a fiero, granted its a 4 cyl, but i did some research on the car and the air flow goes right over the top and vacuums back into the back window pane. unique little car, just couldnt imagine how fast it is with a 400 hp engine in the back. my little 103 hp 4 cylinder gets it moving quite nicely.

yep you could be right or not? there is a time were he needs to check every thing .that car now has a air cleaner sicking out of the stock lid .its EZ to check tape some fuzzy yarn a 1 inch long in line on that part of the lid and drive down the road have someone look at them and see how the air is working them .if swirling around it could be low pressure zone in back of that widow and will screw with the air vents ect on the carb .just thinking out loud. i could be just all wet .i did work on fiero many years ago with a 355 in it when it did run right it was fun. but it was hit and miss .it came down to i think to big of a carb .to much fuel psi . and air getting in the engine.it could of needed smaller cam or more stall .i am not sure if the guy was ever happy with the way it worked he was not willing to try new thing s to make it run better some of the stuff did help smaller carb less fuel psi but still was hit and miss sometimes it did run good but never ran great all the time . i did get worn out on working on his car for freeLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-13-2010 at 08:31 AM.

I have just been brozing thru this post---several basics have been totally misapplied or totally ignored---
In no particular order I have read about a fuel pump malfunction/failure, exhaust headers hooked up where one side blows right into other side, air cleaner base appears to be offset severely, air cleaner mounted thru lid into low pressure area, jet sizes completely out of wack, fuel in oil-----
There needs to be a structured road to resolving these issues not just e bay or craigs list swapping of carbs, etc
First the exhaust has to be separated
Fuel supply/pressure verified to have adquate flow with only around 4 pounds of pressure
Oil changed
Jet size at what Holley put in carbs
3.5 or 4.5 power valve
lock out timing by safty wiring advance mech inside dist, disconnect vacume
set timing to 20-34 degrees
prime carb
no aircleaner
start car
smile
drive car to reasonable speed
put aircleaner on--drive car to reasonable speed
There is a lowpressure/vacume area behind the back glass THAT will effect carb--it will cause the power valve to open and feed too much fuel and the carb will be very erratic acting differently at different vehicle speeds
Put some bright colored yarn around the different areas of the car and video at moderate speeds( It might take 80mph to get a good representation of where the air wants to go)
If you want I will come to Me. and work on it for 2 hours for $1000 plus travel expenses

Pat---just so there is no mis understanding---that was 2 hours for $1000, not $1000 per hour----but I do want lobster for lunch
This ordeal has been on here for 6 months of carb switching
