Serious Problem?
I was trying out some different methods of tweeking my carb today. Basically I the problem started when I removed the internal fuel filter in my quadrajet. Upon starting the engine, the engine made a funny sound..... kind of like a soft backfire. Then the engine seemed to stutter. I got out and noticed the there was quite a bit of clear water coming out of my exhaust.... when I say quite a bit... I mean more than I have even seen come out of it. I thought I might have blown the engine, so I checked the coolant.... It looked a bit dirty (needs a flushing), but no oil.
I then started the car back up. It started right up and ran fine.... but still the water came out of the tailpipes (both tailpipes).
I figure maybe the oil didn't make it into the coolant... maybe the coolant made it into the oil. I drain the oil and there is no coolant in the oil.
So basically I'm stuck here stratching my head about where this water is coming from. Could it be a head problem? And if it is coming out of the exhaust that would mean that The water is getting into my cylinders.... but if that was the case... the engine wouldn't sound like it's running fine right?
Anybody that could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated. Maybe there is no problem at all. I'm stumped. Thanks.

Since it's clear water could it just be condesation? Maybe there was some water in the exhaust from the last time it ran + if the air temp and humidity were just right it might produce more moisture than ususal. I would think if it was an engine problem there would be anti freeze in the water coming from the exhaust pipes. If it has good oil pressure I would run it til it warms up and monitor the engine for problems. See if the water problem goes away after the exhaust has heated up. Maybe do a pressure test on the cooling system? Spoz. you could check compression and check for vac. leaks, but if it's runnin' good, prob. not a vac. leak???? Dunno. If it was runnin' good before, and all you did was took out fuel filter, i wouldn't think it wouldn't be toooo serious. (Did you mean took fuel filter out or replaced fuel filter)??? If you ran it with no filter maybe somthin' got into the carb. to make it run bad??? O.K. .....,, I'll stop thinkin' out loud now.

Thanks for the ideas.....I took out the carb's internal fuel filter... a q-jet tech website said that would effectively solve fuel starvation problems. I still had a normal inline filter in the system... just seems to be too much water for normal condensation. The water looked clear.. it had some exhaust soot mixed into it, so obviously there was some black. At first I looked at it, thought it might be oil. But it wasn't slick. I smelled it... didn't have a coolant smell. Since the water is coming out of the exhaust.... It pretty much narrows it down to condensation or a head problem I would think. The fact that it is coming out of both tailpipes is kind of interesting. The weather has been a little weird up here the last fews days.... maybe I'm over exaggerating. But it just seems like too much water. Thanks.

My guess would be condesation. with the key word being ''guess''. Hope it turns out to be a non-problem.

Yeah it sounds like condensation to me. Is it pretty cold there where your at right now? If so then most likely it is... just let the car run for about 5-10 minutes maybe drive it around a bit and then check it again and it should stop because it's not like clear water would come out of your engine....www.streamlineautocare.com

thanks
Thanks for everyone's input. I did some more tuning and the problem stopped. I have never seen that much water come out of exhaust due to normal condensation. Baffled me. It was a ton of water. Oh well. Thanks.

how it was fixed
I was just messing around. I change dthe points and condenser, and tuned the carb better, problem dissapeared. More luck than anything.

What kind of carb is it because I hear a lot of people saying that Holley carb's have a lot of problems.... is it true?www.streamlineautocare.com
