302 problem
I've got a mercury (ford) 302 that I recetally put a 4 barrel on because the two barrel had a problem with the accelerator pump (I've found the easiest way to fix that kind of thing is to replace it with something bigger or better ) . but after I changed it I haven't been able to get the carb tuned right (i'm assuming it's the carbs not tuned). It will stall and sometimes quite when i give it some gas ( all depends on how much I give it to as if it quits). It also will put out smoke when it is first started and when reved. The engine idiot light comes on faintly (high temp.). The car has been sitting for 9 years and was only started every once in a while. The timing is right, it is a breakerless ignition and has hydraulic lifters. Anybody got a diagnosis?Gerig Michael H.

This is going to sound really stupid, but does your carb have an electric feedback? On the newer Gms, i know that if it is not connected, it reverts to the default setting(rich). We need to know what carb, and what 302.Right engine, Wrong Wheels

it's a '78 302 with a edelbrock 600cfm. I think it's the fuel pump, it is not flowing an adequate amount of fuelGerig Michael H.

What size are the jets in the carb? My 302 die's after the chock let's off because it floods, I need to buy a set of smaller jets, it yer car is running rich tune the idle mix down a little then try to start it again once you get it to operating temp adjust the mixture to yer car the easest way to do this is to turn the mixture screws in until the car trys to stall then find go back until it try's to stall the other way and it will be pretty close to tuned at the fastest idle, if yer car wont stumble no matter were the scews are set you'll need smaller jets. This is assuming every thing else is tuned right plugs gaped and clean the whole nine

I don't know the size of the jets on it(got it off of ebay). But it does sound like it's the jets. It will stall if I do them in but doesn't when I do them outGerig Michael H.

I'll have to check. I've got a clear fuel filter after the fuel pump and it never gets above about 1/16 full and the fuel flows in bursts (with the engine)Gerig Michael H.
