ok sorry i couldnt get a wir voltage tester or what ever when my mom came in from work she went to sleep then when she got up she had to take my brother to a bullride and didnt have time to run me to town but i will check out the sites...........

Nah, I just converted my 51 merc to 12 volts last year works great, all I changed was the generator and the coil. The points are fine.
Also, you should be able to start a 6 volt system simply with a 12 volt battery, just don't do it all the time.
unplug a sparkplug wire and hold it close to the engine, see if the spark jumps when you crank it. Is it timed correctly?
