pontiac and chevy 6's
i am currently rebuilding my 1953 pontiac. and i was jsut curious to whether or not anyones knows if i can use parts for the chevy inline 6's i know that the exhaust and intake manifolds are on the other side of hte engines. and i dont think that makes any difference. but is anything else different inside the engine? i am not sure if the chevy is 235 or 239 and i also dont no what my pontiac is. i have a shop manul and i have searched the internet but i cant find it yet. because there are so many different styles of eevrything that pontiac has in my shop manual. and i havent had time to start crawling around under the car yet. but if anyone could help me with where i could get parts or if the chevy parts will fit .. it would be greatly appreciated.

The 235 Chevy is an overhead valve engine with the valves in the head /The 239 Pontaic is a flat head engine with the valves in the block. They are nothing alike

Make yourself a log ram intake manifold. Use the measurments of the old and use 1/4" steel for the all flanges ( carb and engine ). Have the exzaust manifold split, for dual exzaust.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

i like that idea. i am only 16 and stil in school but there would definitely be some teachers in my school that would be able to help me out. and also if anybody would know where i would be able to get parts for my pontiac engine it would be awesome. i know that it was rebuilt over 20 years ago. and it hasnt been registered for 21 years . but it was sat indoors and this past summer i have had it out and running and it runs good but i would like to get it apart and to learn how to work around engines. and do this alot more often

I would recomend rebuilding an engine that you don't care about ( 4cyl from a junkyard would be good ). The reason is, for rare engines or engines considered obsolete, some internal parts may be hard to find, such as pistions, cranks and a couple other things, and I'm shure your engine falls in this catagory. If it runs good and dosn't smoke, just run it, especially if you are on a budget. Also your engine being a flathead, it is pretty much age old technology that unless you get into building Ford Flatty V8's, you will never have to deal with this unless you are working on an lawnmower. I'm 17 and I got a '51 Chevy Fleetline, with a 235 and Powerglide, it has 62,000 miles on it, dosen't smoke at all and runs great, I have no need to tear it down.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

Oh, most every external and tune up part should be available at Napa, Carquest, Checker if you have 1. There going to look at you crosseyed if you go to places like Advance auto or Autozone. And Get the oldest guy that is at the counter at any place.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

haha i wish we had a carquest or napa or checker. i live in a small city of 10 000 in canada. we have a couple of shops that have supplies for cars and can get a hold of things. and i have noticed its definitely hard to find any internal parts, or any parts for that matter for my pontiac. but i have made friends with a few people at the one shop. one of them being an old guy like you said. he helped me the most and never stopped helping until he did get what i needed. i also would be able to get a hold of alot of of v8 engines out here that would definitely need rebuilding. all of thoe 400+ cubic inches. and they would be cheap too. so i would be able to do that. and in our school next semester i can bring an engine into rebuild and work on in my mechanics class so i will probably do that.
