Please provide recommendations how to acquire or build from scratch a tasty flathead with tri-power, aluminum heads, handsome headers, and any other added features. Looking for dependability, quickness, and good looks for an open sided rod. Also comment on cost. Thanks.

I haven't read the book that Richard recommends but Frank Oddo Knows his flatheads so I'm sure it's a good book.
I have a book called "Rebuilding the famous Ford Flathead" by Ron Bishop. This book covers every aspect of the flathead and even has a chapter on troubleshooting the electrical system. My book has a 1981 copyright date but it's the fifth printing. It's published by Tab books inc. and the price printed on the back cover is $7.95 but it may have gone up since I bought my copy. I think Amazon probably has this book too.

53 Merc Flathead:
I have a line on a 53 Merc flathead that resides in the Midwest. It was pulled from a 53 Merc owned by the town mechanic, who reportedly started it frequently in storage until he died of old age. The buyer yanked it when repowering the Merc with a Chev. It sits with an OD tranny and a separate manifold with two twos, and is available to be palletized and shipped to me. Seller wants $750 plus carb setup, possibly including, but I'd have to get it shipped ($) to Oregon, and obviously not mangnafluxed, and surely no guarantee, considering the distance. Comments invited.

Find out when the last time it was started and if it was only run for a short time . If it's been awhile I would be careful since the flatties had a tendency of having a crack block. I know because I had a 53 and I cracked the block.
