New to forum...uk
Hi,
I live in the uk and am restoring a 69 mustang mach 1 which has a 460ci fitted to a C6 auto box. I have question i would like to ask you all. I am having big problems getting the starter to engage. There seems to be an intermittent fault where by the starter engages then just goes click , click , click! Its a new standard starter and ive had it tested thouroughly but cannot get to the bottom of the problem! The starter is drawing current but not pulling the contacts in.
This is very frustrating as ive spent the last 5 years restoring the car only to find that it doesnt even start!! Especially as im so close to finishing!
If anyone has any ideas id love to to hear from you.
Cheers...Andy.

Hi Denny,
Its goes click with each turn of the ignition key. So its a single click with each go. Its more like a clonk!
The starter circuit has been wired in bypassing the starter relay and going straight from the battery to the starter.
Hope this gives you a bit more info.
Cheers..Andy.

Im afraid the nasty yellow paint is long gone! It took nearly 3 weeks to remove 4 layers of paint with paint stripper by hand! Its now Black Jade which is the original colour and ive gone for the factory stock look, magnum 500's etc but underneath its a real street sleeper!!
Heres a pic of work in progress. The car was as rotton as a pear but is now solid.

Thanks for all your info Denny, Ive never rebuilt one in my life and would not be too keen on starting now!! I should add that this is happening to 2 seperate startwers. The one that was on the car had the same problem. I purchased a new one and its an exact match to the old one and is for a 460ci. The new one seems to be worse than the old one! I can crank the engine over by hand and it turns over freely when the starter does actually decide to engage. It bench tests fine off the car.
The problem with living in the uk is no one wants to touch anything from your side of the pond, its pure ignorance and when ive asked for simple things people look at me like im from another planet!! Their loss i suppose.
Im thinking that maybe the battery feed cable to the starter is too small and also bypassing the relay could have something to do with it.
If you have time check out www.mocgb.co.uk its the uk's mustang owners club. Ive got a couple of posts on there which you may find interesting. Have a look at A Cautionary Tale.
Thanks again..Andy.

Get a gear reduction starter
This is the ministarter that I have in my car. I have these starter in two other race cars. Takes up less room and you have more cranking power.

Hi,
Thanks for all your replys the info that some of you have passed on has been useful in getting my starting problem sorted out.
Ive thought about useing a hi torque mini starter but for the moment i think the problem lies else where. A friend of mine suggested that i may fitted the starter ring the wrong way round!! Im going to check it out tomorow, If i have then i shall where a paper bag on my head for a few weeks!!
Thanks..Andy.

Denny,
I went over the car thoroughly yesterday and checked all the points raised.
I eventually found the problem to be the terminal connection on the end of the live cable from battery to starter. My so called electrician had failed to solder or even crimp it to the end of the cable and it was loose!!
I put a jump lead from battery to starter and it turned over first time, took the lead off and nothing.
Its always the simple things that go wrong!!
Thanks for all your ideas, Ill keep you all posted on progress and ill get some pics of the car soon.
Thanks..Andy.
