    The Ford parts dates mean the year the part was first used. If it went on unchanged, the year code didn't change.

    These block identifying marks (C9VE, D0VE, D1VE, etc.) are not actual "casting numbers" or "year codes" or "date codes," but are in fact noted engineering revisions that are cast into the block castings. They give not so much the actual year that the block was cast but more specifically tell the revision of the block as specified by said engineering revision. The actual date code is alphanumeric (like "5D24") and is located in the lifter valley.
