460 in my torino
i acquired a 1971 460 and started to build it up for my 1970 torino. along the way i purchased a magnum cam kit from summit for 429/460(cam,lifters, timing chain, springs, retainers). it has been installed and the cam lobes are about 1/4" set back in the block and are not alligned center with the lifter holes when all assembled and torqued with the timing gear. upon looking up the part number and getting the full description on the computer for the cam kit, it says it is for 68 and on 429s, but has a specific year for the 460 from 1972-1995. i was curious if the 71 and older blocks have a slightly different depth to the block or something like that? i ordered it with just the catalogue and it did not say anything except that it was for 429/460. im stumped and really annoyed, any help and info would be great----Last edited by mxtodd9495; 12-26-2008 at 05:10 PM.

do you have the trust plate on the front of the block if not the cam will be back in the block . lobes are not in dead center of lifter bores on any engine with a flat lifter cam engineLast edited by pat mccarthy; 12-26-2008 at 05:42 PM.

plate
yes i have a comp cams torrington assemble and billet thrust plate on it. i dont know if u know much about them but the cam gear gets machined and on is put on the inside of the timing gear, then comes the plate bolted down, then another bearing assembly. so it must be something behind that plate that it off

Todd,
All 429/460 blocks can interchange their camshafts into any other 429/460 block throughout the entire production run. (For a brief discussion of block differences, click HERE.)
As Pat noted above, the camshaft lobes are intentionally offset from beneath the flat tappet lifters because this promotes lifter rotation (the lifters rotate in their bore).
Any other questions during your engine build, feel free to ask.
