flywheel question
I recently asked about some casting numbers from a fe i bought recently that was in pieces and got some great info. This time I have a question about a 390 that my dad had bought about four years ago. Its a 390 out of a 65 t-bird. I want to put it into a project 57 f-100. The thing is that I want to put a 4 speed toploader behind it that was behind my 429 cobra jet that is in my 55 f-100. My question is, Will the flywheel from the 429 work behind the 390?

Yes, a FE and 385 series motors have the same pattern.
The ONLY difference is the 428 FE needs to be re-balanced to fit a zero flywheel. The 428 has it's own offset weight.
You have no worries though with your set up.'64 Galaxie: Blown 390/4 spd

Hi Larry (FT) and welcome! Funny how you slowly see all the same guys on all the different FE forums. There are some really good guys that hang here. G.Last edited by FFR428; 07-27-2005 at 04:00 AM.

The 390 is balanced different from the 429 also. I have done this in a pinch but is really hard on the bearings. Sounds like its going to be a real neat truck. Course it is a Ford.Choose your battles well===If it dont go chrome it

Ya, found this place months ago. Kinda lurk around occasionally.
Ives.........the flywheel is NEUTRAL balanced so it does not matter what it's bolted to. As long as the motor is INTERNALLY balanced...the flywheel is neutral....it makes no matter.
I have my 428's internally balanced so that I can run a neutral wheel and not have to worry down the road if I need to change flywheels.'64 Galaxie: Blown 390/4 spd

Thanks to everyone for the help. I always thought it would work but was skeptical. My dad kept telling me it would work yet i still wanted someone else's opinion. Thanks.
Thank you Roger. .
