help is greatly appreciated
Right now the 68ltd is being really, really ghetto.i drove it around town for a few miles and it started bogging down and getting no spark. it broke down and i got a ride back to my other car and i went and got a new set of points, rotor, condenser, and cap. after i replaced that, it started, but every time you revved it, the intake would backfire like mad. i don't know what to do with it, timing is really weird on it. you advance it, intake backfire/you retard it, sluggish and intake backfire. i wired the cap the way the manual says for a 390 4v, i'm starting to think that its wrong. if information is what you need, it's a Z engine code, and U tranny code. it don't have the other info with me right now because the car is broken down in a parking lot. thank you alot if you can help me at all. i want to get this thing to go like a beast again.i hated the fast and the furious

68 it do sound like the timing chain/gear. If I remember right, they were using "plastic" gears for a while to "quieten" the engine.

thanks for the help i really needed it. it should run like a champ now, i still think the manual has firing order all jacked up. whay should it be orginally? and another thing i never intended this thread to be a chevy vs. ford thing. i already heard enough of that crap all in the states i've visited.i hated the fast and the furious

ok i got the damn car to stop the intake backfire, but now i replaced the coil for it to stop dying when it warms up. only thing is that it still does it even when idling. like, you can start it in the morning and it runs fine, but as soon as it gets warmed up, it starts to quit when you rev it, it bogs down like crazy. i think my choke is all messed up. any advice? or should i ditch this engine and get a better one?i hated the fast and the furious

ok the engine is still messed up. again. it runs great when it's idling, but as soon as you go and get into 3rd gear, it will start hesitating in 3rd. so i floor it and it bogs down and then catches up to itself. it will keep doing this until it decides it has had enough and i finally dies. what is going on here? i replaced the coil and adjusted the choke and it still does it. any advice? help me please so i can drive it more than 2 miles and not having to worry about it dying out on me!i hated the fast and the furious

How stock is the motor? (carb, intake, etc)
how many miles on the engine?
the tick is pretty common on all ford V8s.
Did you do the timing chain check?
have you checked stock timing (with vac line off and plugged) with a light? When you hook up the vac line to the dist again, does timing advance? (as seen with the light)?
Firing order is cast into the intake manifold. #1 cyl is the one farthest forward when looking straight down on the engine from in front of the car.
I assume you have points, right? Clean and properly gapped? is your condenser good? are you sure? How did you set the points? Do yo uhave a dwell meter to check that?
Did you get the right coil? (elec ign and points ign use different coils.) Did you get the + and - connections right? (wrong will run, but not well)

nevermind you guys, i'm getting a better engine now. a 460 w/ edelbrock carb, stripped of all emissions equipment. 950 bucks, and it's been rebuilt. or i could get a 360 with a 390 crank. my engine is pretty much gone now, it's too old and all original.i hated the fast and the furious

Check the carb gas line to the secondaries sound like the needle and seat area. especially if the bogging starts at the same time the 4 barrel is opening
