428 Rods
Can anyone tell me what the Rod length for a 428 is, and if it differes from a 390? Thanks

Also keep in mind there were two different size rod bolts thickness wise. You'll find that the rods will have the same casting numbers just different thickness in the bolts in some cases. Just something to watch for when shopping.

Forgot to mention some FE rods are the same and just use a differnet casting number other than the bolt sizes. C3AE-C and the C7AE-B are a good example of this.

i'd reccomend going with the thicker bolt size if possible, the more metal the tougher generallyjust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

Aftermarket rods will be capscrew rods and there will be no bolt size issue.

Dose anyone have an opinion on scats stroker rotating assemblies? Im looking at getting one of them for my new motor that is destined for a 48 Ford Pickup to run in D/Gas (10.60 Goodguys Class) so im kinda sketchy on how much power a cast steel crank can hold up to in these kind of conditions, my target is about 700HP so any opinions? Thanks Guys

The Scat stuff is nice and seems to hold up well. I've heard you can push the oem iron cranks to 800hp. I've only done 600+ in my builds with no issues. Keep in mind Scat advertises as "cast steel" which is by all rights cast nodular iron. You can get forged steel stroker cranks but they are $$$$ at $2000 and up.... Some guys feel the Scat stuff being cast overseas is inferior to american made products. But with 7 years track record in FE's by Keith Craft and other such builders they do very well. The cranks do need a slug or two of mallory to balance them. I'm pretty sure they are all zero balance also. The next build I'm planning now wil use a Scat 4.25 crank, oliver rods and a Pond Iron 427 block. I've also heard Scat has a 4.375 FE crank coming out soon. Hmmm....LOL

My machinest has told me the older scat stuff is junk, but they seem to have been working all the kinks out, and with an FE with a cast steel crank, they had 4 years on a circle track car weighing in excess of 3200lbs, so they can live up to the abuse, i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with them so far, thanks for the info
