    Do I have a 428 or a 390??

I have recently picked up to FE Ford engines and I am having a very hard time figuring out what type of engines they acally are.

The casting number on the first engine are C7ME-A
    According to
    http://www.fordification.com/FEcasting-numbers.htm

330MD Medium Duty Truck engine or a '67-'70 428 c.i.d. 428-4V, Police Interceptor, Cobra Jet

The second engine says 8D30 20D11

Any help that any has a would greatly appreciate! I know nothing about Fords

Casting numbers are PMU being mostly generic. By that I mean a 390, 428, 391, 330 etc could all have the same casting number on the block. The 8D30 is on the block? If so it's the date code of 68/April/30th. Have a look at the back of the block for a "A" or "C" sandscratch. It's a crude marking and can be reversed. This would quickly tell you the block is a 428. If not you might have a 390 or other. You'd need to remove a head and measure the cyl bore in that case. 360 and 390 both share the same block with a 4.05 std bore. The 428 has a 4.13 std bore. Crank stroke can be determined a few different ways. First by removing the oil pan and looking at the edge of the 7th counterweight for these stampings.... IU, IUB and IUA are 428/410 3.98" stroke cranks. 2U and 3U are 2 of the more common 390 3.78" stroke cranks. 2T and 2TA are the more common 360 3.50" cranks. If removing the oilpan is not an option you can remove the # 1 & 4 sparkplugs, put the engine on TDC, and install a piece of wood dowel in #1 and mark using a common edge guide. Then put in #4 and re-mark again using the same common edge guide. Then measure the distance between the marks. As noted 3.98 or roughly 4" is a 428/410 crank. 3.78 or roughly 3 3/4" is a 390 and 3.50" the 360. You can find the cylinders marked on the runners of the intake. If you can get the intake casting numbers and the head casting numbers post what they are. Head casting numbers are between the center 2 sparkplugs. Here's a rundown on a few combo's you might find.

    360- 4.05 bore and 3.50 stroke.
    390- 4.05 bore and 3.78 stroke.
    410- 4.05 bore and 3.98 stroke.
    428- 4.13 bore and 3.98 stroke.

406 and 427 are other engines but doubt they'd apply here. But if so....
    406- 4.13 bore and 3.78 stroke.
    427- 4.23 bore and 3.78 stroke.

    Lemme know what ya find....
