Supercharged FE???????
Hi everyone, let me introduce myself as this is my first post. My name is Chris and I have a 1968 Ford XL Galaxie 2 door fastback with a 390fe, c6 auto and 9" Rear. I am starting to rebuild it and the focus will be on a large bore 6-71 supercharger. My problem is finding enough sources about running a 390fe with about 800hp.
Here is my plan:
390fe stroked to a 445 with survival motors 445 Stroker kit
Blue Thunder stage X or Edelbrock Stage 5 heads
Superchargers USA Large bore 6-71 blower kit
Transzilla T-56 6-speed Transmission
What I am looking for is a streetable car to take on the hotrod power tour, be able to drive it to car shows but be able to squeeze out a 10 second 1/4 mile every once in a while.
I am having trouble finding 390's built in a similar fashion. I want to see where the problems are and how they solved them and if the survival kit can handle 800+ hp. I have tried to e-mail them 2 or 3 times, but have yet to recieve a response.
Any ideas, thoughts on head choice anything you got, please bring it up. Last thing i want is to build a $15,000 motor that blows up in a week.

Took me a while to find this thread - been pretty busy.
The components of the stroker kit may be able to handle that power level - assuming forged pistons and the H beam rod uprade - but the 390 block will be well beyond its design limits. Adding cross bolts will help - but its still gonna be pretty marginal if you really get after it. You'd be bettor off saving up for an aftermarket 427 block - they are much sturdier.
The Blue Thunder heads have made over 700HP naturally aspirated - so your power level is easy to reach with those. It would take more boost to hit the number with the Edelbrocks - but I've been well over 600 N/A and around 650 with a Novi and 8 lbs on a real mild 428 - so it's "doable"..

the only reason I want to use the 390 block is for the fact that it is the original block. I have been debating going with a 460, but I really want to stick with the fe. I have seen the 427 blocks from companys for about $4,000 but thats too much for what I want. I don't want to drag race the car, I just want a cruiser with a run to the 1/4 mile track once every 3 months or so.
Barry, how much can a 390 block safely handle in your opinion?

The basic 390 block is good to somewhere in the range of 550 to 600 horsepower. Beyond that it's pretty sketchy. Does not mean it will break at any given point, it just becomes more likely as you are out there..

I found a guy who had a machine shop make the 427 cross-bolted mains fit on a 390, so thats what I plan on doing, i would think is should handle up to 750hp. I don't plan on making trips to the track every week, just run it around 600hp and every once in awhile bump it to 700 or so for a run or 2.
