Ford 460
I am new to fords in general, and was wondering what to look for, when looking for a ford 460 (w/trans hopefully). I want a complete engine, so i dont have to go hunting for parts. Also how interchangeable are ford parts, are they as swapable as GM stuff, or is there more work involved. I have a 93 thuderbird that I would love to slam a 460 into. would a 3.8 trans housing bolt right up to the 460.

I dont think that trans will bolt up at all and if it did the 460 would destroy it.
Basically all the older stuff is the same on the 460...some parts only work with certain combinations of other parts ,mainly the valve train components.
Then about 1986 or 87 most became fuel injected and those heads and intakes will only work together ,no mixing carbed heads and fuel injected intakes or carbed intakes on fuel injected heads.
The 460 came in 2 styles of balance internal and external balance....almost all blocks are the same and will interchange ,except for some of the exotic ones.
A newer fuel injected 460 and c-6 trans would be a easy swap on the engine side, not sure what you have to do the bolt it in the car.....
Good luck ,sounds like a fun deal.
I know people put those engines in that car ,probably need certain motor mounts or k member and a trans cross member ,possibly some swap headers too......
The 460 is a great engine with lots of parts available and can make alot of HP at about the same price as chevy engines.....one great thing about the 460 is a 4.5 stroke crank is a bolt in deal....making the engine about 545 cubic inches depending on bore. Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

A 3.8 will not bolt up to a 429/460 ,the only trans that will bolt up directly are a c6 or a manual built to bolt to the 385 series engine group. The 460 can be built to be a torque monster . Just do search's on this site and/or the web, there is a wealth of info out there for these motors.
Good Luck!!
