    '66 C6 w/FMX valve body

Just thought I'd ask the question, since this is what we found while having what I thought was the standard Cruise-O-matic (FMX) transmission rebuilt on my '66 T-bird. Because of the valve body it shifts like a green dot but is inside a C6 case. Anyone ever heard of that and was it one of those Ford plant things where they used parts across model lines?

The two valve bodies are not interchangable.

"..... Because of the valve body it shifts like a green dot but is inside a C6 case......."

For the youngsters out there, Fords in the early 60s with the "green dot" had the shift quardrant marked P R N D 1 .

In the D position the transmission would start out in 2nd gear and only shift to drive (or 3rd). Putting the shifter on the green dot (normally what whould be marked 2 on most other tranmsission) the transmission started out in 1st and would auto shift thru 2nd and drive.

Gandore in answer to your question some (if not all) of the of the first year C6s used the green dot shift pattern. I found that out as the first C6 I had set aside for my 64 Ford was a green dot and I ended up digging up a later transmission for the swap.

Thanks, Mike. It caught the shop and I by surprise since the original window sticker on my car says 'Cruise-O-matic' and we assumed it would be the FMX in there vice the C6. This car still has the original CA smog running on the 428 and I'm hesitant to touch it only because I imagine there aren't that many left with it still intact, although I still think seriously of building the engine a bit to get what power should be coming out of it instead of the pinging I get with the lower octane fuel. What have you folks done to remedy this?

Thanks, Mike P. Did you swap for the normal pattern or is there something not strong enough in what I have?

Although I recall hearing there were a couple of minor differences in the first green dot C6s I don’t recall anything affecting the strength of them.

I originally built the FE in the 64 Ford for a 61 T Bird I used to own and had I kept the car and installed the engine in it I would have used the green dot C6 in a heartbeat.

I used the later C6 in the 64 strictly for the shift pattern.

Thanks, Mike P. That's what I needed to know. I'll stick with my current set up then and go for the engine mods after I finish up the suspension first.
