    428 crankshaft into a 390

    Hi!

I have a Ford FE 390 with a broken crankshaft and I could get a new 428 crank with bearings. What should I do with the adittional parts: pistons, rods.
Which can I use from my 390 FE?
I know that I have to have internally balanced the 428 crank.
Can I use the 390's rods with new 410 Mercury pistons?
Can I just cut some material from the top of the 390's pistons to use with the 428 crankshaft?
I don't have too much money on this project therefore I want to use many parts from my old 390.

    Thanks!

If you are on a budget, get a 390 crank and bearings

The Rod lengths are all the same from the 352, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428.
So there is no problem using the rods. I would have some ARP rod bolts installed though for strength.

I bought it already but it was broken. I live in eas Europe so the shipping for another would be very pricey. That's why I would play with the 428 crank.

    OK---428 crank it is

The pistons will have .100 less ch---the balance of a 428 uses external weight so you will have to have those parts or use heavy metal for balancing
Rods are same length but probably should be recondition with new bolts and pin bushings

You can shave the 390 pistons if they are thick enough. And if the block checks out to stay the same size. Or if not buy a off the shelf 410 piston. And yes you need to internally balance the rotating assy or change to an external balance flywheel or flexplate when using the 428 crank. Just be sure the 428 crank is indeed a 428 crank! Edge of #7 counterweight on the crank will have a 1U or 1UB. The stock 390 balancer can be used as well.

Do you have a Cougar? If so what year and etc.....?? I have a 68.
