390 HP figures
I have been reading thru this forum quite a bit now and have a basic idea for my 390 build.I'm looking to make around 450HP and was curious if this combo would work. Here is what I've come up with:
Comp cams 33-208-3 Cam Kit
(Grind#275DEH,advertised dur 275/285 515/541 lift 219/232@ .050)
Edlebrock #60069 Performer RPM Heads(Box Stock)
Edlebrock #7105 RPM Intake
750 CFM carb
Sealed Power #L2291F60 .030 Power Forged Pistons
Full length Hooker Headers
My guestimation is somewhere in the mid 400's.Am I correct? Also is this combination steetable?Mostly Fri/Sat night cruise/stop light to stoplight
Thanks JOHN

from those parts where do you think that you will get 400+hp???
The hp390 solid lifter,was factory rated 375hp and with 3x2 at 401

I don't think Jerry was being anything but honest based on experience... You can get 450 out of an FE, but it's going to take some major rework on a set of HP heads or a set of aftermarket aluminum heads. Don't know about the cam, last one I put together I had Barry at Survival Motorsports make the cam selection...he's one of the best FE guys around and runs a really first rate business.
Not hearing what you want to hear can hurt your feelings, but most of us on CHR prefer honesty to inflated "brag numbers" on horsepower, and Jerry has built enough of these and most any other model of engine to know what he's talking about.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Just my $0.02 here, but I have never really been concerned about "how much horsepower" will a certain combo make. I'd be looking more at what you intend to do with the drivetrain once it is built. Is this for a street cruiser, pure strip machine, mud truck, etc. ? Where do you need the power? Lots of power in the low to mid rpm range for a cruiser? Peak HP for the track? Match all the parts (from front to back) to work together and you end up with much better results (and satisfaction) than shooting for an arbitrary number.
If you want a guesstimate, I'd say you would probably end up somewhere between the 370-410 HP area at the crank.

funny its the same basic build that was in an earlier thread that asked about 500 hp from a 390 that is posted on on page 2 of this forum Techinspecter1 ran it thru his dynosim and it went over 500.What gives?????????Tuffdawg engines claim the same basic combo is over 400hp
That was my whole quetion,WILL IT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!Simply say no and give some suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I THINK THATS WHAT I ASKED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!
I also asked if the same combo was streetable but I guess noone read down that far
I'm not upset because I heard something I didnt want to here,In fact thats what I wanted to know.My thing is the way it was worded. And I have a 5000 dollar budget for my engine!!!!!!!!!!

To make my point clear Lord Antagonism says what is it intended for.I clearly stated that at the beguinning of the thread. So maybe U all should read the whole thing and then give an opinion,NOT A CONDISENDING ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!
I'M OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jhnwdwrd, i think you motor will make 5 squillion HP. Now do you want to come back and play?
Now if I were you, I would take your $5000 and look for a 428 because more cubes is the easiest way to your 450hp goal.
Actually, if you go to the Clubcobra.com site, you will find all manner of FE people who will tell you what you want to hear. But be careful over there, their first love is side oiler 427s and they arent so cheap.
And they can get you a 427 SOHC for about $40,000. But its all alloy and its way cool

Hmmmm. Just more ranting, and still no information on what heads and what mods have been done to them....Ain't gonna work without good heads! Oh well.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Actually didnt see the header post.ICause I found what I was looking for.I DIDNT look hard enough.MY BOO BOO.
I have thought about the 428.460 also. I can put my hands on an earlier 460.Have to hunt for a 428.
As far as what I have now is the 390.Wanted to mess with it.The last engine I messed with was a 292 ford.Call me a glutin for punishishment.
I guess I will play nice.THNX
So what kinda numbers do you all think those parts will make?

OK---glad thats over---I'll help you any way I can---I don't do desk top dynos, I do engines. And I have been doing the Y and Fe blocks since mid 50s.
Do you want to burn the tires stoplite to stoplite??? or run smoothly along with just a good sounding exhaust???Look good under the hood???
Thanks!! I usually do the "NZ Slang" lookup but decided to poke the bear this time! ;):D:p
