Fresh Rebuild hear a valve tick?
Hey Guys,
So my fresh rebuild has about 300 miles on it. Motor was broken in on the dyno, drained of its oil, I installed it, put fresh oil in it, ran it for about 200km and just put fresh oil in again. Being the total stress case I am, I am always checking for leaks after each drive and listening for odd noises. I thought after having a listen I could here a faint ticking noise, reved up the motor and sure enough there is a tick in the valve train. Is it common on a fresh rebuild that you have to re-adjust the valve lash after such a short period of time?
Car is a 1966 Thunderbird, 390Fe RV cam.
Running 10W30 Oil (ford Motorcraft Diesel) I was told to run this because of the additives.
Sorry if these are kinda newb questions, I am an apprentice and still learning, and Im trying to do my best to protect my latest investment in this engine rebuild.

run it with the valve covers removed---check for oiling and also look very carefully to see if the pushrods are spinning---if you find one that is not, you may be loosing the cam lobe and you can further check by measuring the amount of lift compared to others---if you can visually notice its bad, if you have to measure with a dial indicator----write down amounts and check again in a few miles

sure, fix the leak. Due to it being on the pressure side I would imagine it would have to leak ALOT in order for starvation to be an issue. With pumps of any kind suction leaks are a much bigger deal.
I do not have the exceptional knowledge and experience of mr clayton, but I was thinking along the same lines as him. I would at the very least double and triple check the valve lash.
I always focus on the simple and free things to test out before delving any further.
best of luck,
Drew
