64 galaxie removed from barn 10-18-10
Hello i recently found a 64 Galaxie 500XL fastback , the guy i
bought the car from says it is a 427 (not original motor) however i am having a
hard time comfirming this. the motor has a big solid cam sounds and runs like a
strong running 427. the motor does have tri power. heads are early
casting C1AE6090A, the block has no numbers and has external ribs down both
sides of block. not side oiler, has threaded holes were side oiler bolts would
go. this car has door panels rear package tray and dash pad like no other galaxie
i have seen ? are they original ? i will add a couple of photos. Thanks any
information is greatly appreciated. KennyLast edited by FKEN500; 12-03-2010 at 07:39 PM.

Kenny, welcome to CHR and congrats on the barn find Galaxie. I've resized and reposted your pics because they are too large and hard to see when you have to scroll back and forth across the screen. Try deleting your pics to bring the screen back into normal size and hopefully my pics will be stacked on top of each other rather than side by side. Hopefully one of our Ford experts can help you identify the engine.

Kenny, not a problem, we're here to help. Don't be shy about posting pics, we love lots of pics and like to see what others are working on. I'm definitely not a Ford guy so I can't answer your engine questions but back in my younger days, I had a close friend with a Ford 406 with 3 2bbl carbs, maybe that's what you have. Someone will answer your questions soon.

i have only owned this car 6 weeks. in the progress of rebuilding all window regulators, just finished doing all the brakes and a couple of front end bushings. car does not need much.

427's all had cross bolted mains so you should find 3 bolt heads running along (just above) the base pan rail. I believe some of the early 406's also had cross bolted mains.
The ribs are supposed to be there for the later blocks, they were meant to add strength that early blocks lacked. A great site for FE info is fordfe.com, a lot of knowledge there. FE's can be terrible to identify. The surest way is to measure the bore & stroke.

my guess would be that is a 1970's block from a ford pickup truck.
360 or a 390.
you'll never know what the engine is without taking the heads off.

Date code on the block is 72-Nov-23. Hard to see if the last digit is a 3-5-6 or 8 but Nov 72 block no doubt. It could be a 428 or 390 block. Does not look like a 427. The heads are older 61 and the 3x2 setups are cool and period correct. Tell me is there a 352 or reverse 105 on the front left side of the block? 64 Gal is a nice ride too! Very cool.

i don't think it is a 428 this motor is not external balanced. it is hard for me to believe it is a 390. i saw time slip for this car it ran 12.33 when it had 4.11 rear end gears. is it possible it could be 390 block with different crank combination ? just not sure. i have not seem a 390 with the ribs on block ? I am a Chevrolet guy this is my first ford i just have never had such a hard time trying to identify a motor. yes block doe's have 352 on LH front of block. thanks for input FFR428

That's just one of the pit falls trying to ID and FE engine. Blocks can have generic casting numbers or none at all. Making it hard to impossible to tell from the outside alone. If your not seeing 3 maincap crossbolts on each side of the block that would tell it. The 352 on the block tells me it was cast at the old Dearborn foundry. Only the 427 and 428 blocks remained cast there after Ford new foundry took over all other FE block production. 427's stopped about 72 and 428's were still cast there until 74. Very possible it can be a late 360-390 from there too before the 360-390 blocks went to the new Michigan Casting Center. You can run a solid cam in any FE block. And sure it could be a 390-406-410 besides a 428. Almost anyone guess what's inside. You can measure the stroke. Put #1 on TDC and remove #1 and #4 spark plugs. This will leave #4 at BDC. Use a length of wood dowel or stiff wire. Insert in each plug hole and mark using a common edge as a guide. Measure the distance between. With only .20 difference you need to be accurate. Cyl bore would still be the question tho.
390 has a 4.05 bore and 3.78 stroke. Internal bal.
406 has a 4.13 bore and 3.78 stroke. Internal bal.
410 has 4.05 bore and 3.98 stroke. External bal.
427 has 4.23 bore and 3.78 stroke. Internal bal.
428 has 4.13 bore and 3.98 stroke. External bal.
This with stock stuff inside. How can you tell it's not external balance?

if motor is external balance should have counter balance weight on flex plate, i have none. also from crank has just a pulley no counter balance weight. i guess i have a surprise until i pop head off to measure bore. the motor probably does not have much over 10k miles on it. no leaks, will run excellent once i rebuild carbs. putting correct fuel line and filter set up back on. Thanks for your input gives more to think about.
