Here's some more questions for ya: What kind of '74 Ford? Is the engine original to the vehicle?
Heads This site says the heads are from a 360 or 390 FE with hardened valve seats. That would also mean it must be an FE engine. You'll have to measure the stroke to determine which it is.
Also the "D2" suggests '72 for the year of the heads but I don't know if they still used the same number for other years.Last edited by randyr; 08-04-2012 at 11:50 AM.

Re : 74 engine
Hi, and Thanks for the help. The engine is in a 1974 F-100 truck. I believe it is original to the truck. The title and door vins match, but on the tag found behind the engine the 5th letter changes from an R to a P. Other numbers on the tag are as follows :
F10YPTO4658 26-116
YX 133 BDY 4 WDE
MN DLX RPO CUS
C X E ? J MID AFT
( between the E and the J ( where the ? is ) in the last line there is a cutout that resembles a 6 )
It is also a side oiler.
Do you have any idea what D2TE-AA stand for ? From what I've read the AA stands for PI side oiler. Does that sound right ? Thanks for your help.

Hey Beaur, to be honest I'm not sure what the other numbers/letters mean but I can tell you where to find out. Go to Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum 1973 - 1979 F-100 & Larger F-Series Trucks - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums. Register with a username/password like here and go to the '73-79 section of the forum. Post your VIN, etc and those guys will help you with all kinds of info. Ford trucks is all they do so there's a lot of good info for ya there.

In the meantime, this might be helpful...Ford Truck VIN Decoder 1973 - 1980
Apparently, you have a 1974 F100 2WD with a 360V8 built in Twin Cities, MN.
Here's another site: http://www.oldride.com/library/1974_ford_f100.html
The other numbers will indicate trans, rearend, color, interior, etc but I'm still looking for the decoder on that.

I wondered that, too, Jerry. I guess, technically speaking, my 352FE in '66 F100 might also be considered a side oiler given all the oil running down the side of it!
Ah, but I digress.....
After a variety of google searches, the only Ford FE engine I've seen classified as a "side oiler" was the 427, which was also offered in the "top oiler" configuration at some point. I didn't bother to post the years here.Last edited by randyr; 08-05-2012 at 10:09 AM.
