What the H--- Do I Got?
67 Ford P/U. Was told it was 390 from previous owner. FoMoCo didn't put 390 in trucks til 68 and vin tab agrees it was a six. It's been cammed, headers, angled valve job with intake and exhaust polished. Front of motor is stamped "352" so I know it is an FE. Top end rebuilder say it was 4.05 bore bored .030 over. Block # is C6ME-A and head # is C7AE-A. In my SA Design "High Performance Book" by George Reid the only time I find this block number and head number together is in a 410 Merc. or a 66-68 390 High Performance w/ Thermactor. What is a Thermactor? Thanks for any assistanceDeo Vindice

C6ME-A with a 4.05 bore could be a 390 or 360 also. The crank will tell you which you have if the engine is believed to be fairly original. The 360 used a 3.50 stroke crank and the 390 a 3.78. If it's a 410 you will have a 3.98 (std 428) stroke crank. So I'd have a look at the internals to really see what's there. If you want an easy way to check the stroke of the crank without ripping into the engine do the following..... 1) take a spark plug out. 2) crank the engine to TDC. 3) stick a lenght of wood dowel or pencil etc... into the plug hole and turn over by hand with a breaker bar to BDC. Use something long enough so it won't fall in! 4) mark and measure the distance the dowel moved down into the cyl bore. This will give you an idea what crank is in there. 3 1/2" for a 3.50 stroke crank and so on. The casting numbers on the crank and rods will tell you exactly what you have but if it's a running engine and you don't want to tear it down this will help. Good luck, G.

Thanks 428: My book does show the C6ME-A as a 360 but does not show the C7AE-A head with the 360 block. I know this beast will pull the front wheels off the ground using the C5AR 3 speed manual tranny, angled valve job, headers, both are ported and polished, cammed lightly with the 268H or 270H, StreetMaster intake with a 730 Carter. After I get back delievering a load of shine to Ohio I'll measure the stroke. With a toploader I'll go Chevy hunting!Deo Vindice

Hope it's a 410 like you think. Those are really sweet engines. Good luck, G.
