fe blocks
right now i have several cars and trucks with fe's in em..my 62 galaxie XL convertible has a what i was told was a 406 but im am not convinced and am trying to figure it out now but i know it was very fast and pegged the speedo right quick..my 71 f-100 has the original 360 i put a dura spark ing. and a later model standard overdrive in and the radiator from my 69 camper special (huge bugger) it did well for alot of years but has been resting for the past several years with a slipping clutch..i also have a 63 1/2 galaxie 2 dr h/t that had the original 352 i was getting ready to rebuild. had the block bored .30 and the crank turned .10 and thats as far as its got it now sits in the yard with the engine in the trunk to be sold or worked on later..my 73 ford f-100 has a 390 4bbl but i just use it around here to haul junk with..now im working on a 51 shoebox and am wanting to put what i was told is a 427 fe in it..if i can find a top loader to make it like a 60's street car like we used to run in the day. it may be ready to run this fall i hope..well that's all of my fe's besides the extra 390 i have for parts..well plus several out in old cars i have out backif you cant run with the big dogs

first of all then 406's like the 427's only came with a 4-speed manual transmission.no p/s no p/b no a/c. in 61 ford had a 401 horse 390 that came with a 3x2 intake(dealer installed, came from factory with a single 4-barrel, the 3x2 set up was in the trunk.) i don't think it was an opt. in 62. some of the 406's had cross bolt mains but the early ones did not. the 63's did.

that is a fact
yea i have read up on all of this..but that only is true with bone stock original cars..of the ones i have most have been taken apart and modified, engines have been changed, some more than once im sure. so a person still has to just about pull the heads off of the FE blocks in these old cars to be sure of what you have..sometimes even numbers checked on cranks and such things as exhaust bolt configuration, cross bolted blocks and solid lifter cams (but ya really need to remove the timing cover or trans to be sure of that i think)..i guess you cant believe whats on the valve covers or air filter tops or what the seller told you to get you to buy it. i think on the FT blocks they will have the 4 bolt mounts as a easy way to indentify them. other than that im not sure you can tell what engine is actually in your car by a fast glance..if there are other ways to tell what engine im looking at i would like to be informed so i can better identify at a glance these great old engines. i have several more FE engines in old cars out in my yard and i am sure still learning and would like any info on these, like how to tell which is which.. that is what makes forum's like this so much fun and interesting to be involved in....thanks R.C.
