    302 parts interchangable ?

    I have a 69 302 w/ 351w heads. I want too update to d. side water pump, serpintine belt, ps,ac etc...I can't aford all the aftermarket set up's $$$$
I have a motor from an 86 302. Can I swap timing cover, water pump, pulley set up and brackets etc... to my 69 302??
Has anyone ever don this before? Are the bolt holes in the heads consistent over the years etc....?

    Thanks

as far as i know, you should have no problem doing so, but you're going to have to get aftermarket idlers where the smog pumps should mount and such things like that... they do make them for racing, they cost about $100 for the idler.... but yeah you should have no problem, i was actually planning to do the same with my 302... seeing that aftermarket kits are from $1000 and up.... the only thing i'm not too sure about is the power steering bracket, i dont know if your pump will fit it or anything of the such, if thats the case, you could go with the new pump and use some hose adaptors

I wouldnt be so sure about this guys. Ford has a hsitoryof changing bolt asmblies across motors. Your best bet would be to grab a sheet of paper and draw and measure your current assembly. then draw and compare the newer motor. If your sheets overlap, it should work. As for the head bolts, grab your local chiltons manual. They should have the head bolt sizes listed

the only thing that you hafta make sure of doing with the conversion is taking the harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate off the 5.0 because they're lighter than stock, and the balancer i believe has the pull built on to it... you could probably take all of it from a junkyard car for about $80

Every thing should bolt up except the balancer pulley. In 69 Ford us a three bolt pattern on the harmonic balancer for the pulley. That changed to a four bolt pattern in 70 or 71. In 80 ford changed the balance on the 302. Unless your 69 already has the four bolt balencer you will need to find one from a 70's motor to use the 86 balancer pulley. The only other differences I know of are the dip stick hole in the timing cover was removed, you can use the 69 cover with 86 parts if you need to.

Other differences that don't affect you are the addition of a dip stick hole in the side of the block, and the removal of the bolt hole on the drivers side rear for a clutch linkage pivot.

I just put an 82 302 in my 61 Unibody in place of the well used 71 302. Removed the serpintine stuff and put it back generator and all. Only prob was the clutch linkage, with a little fabbing I had a bracket on the bellhousing bolts to hold it instead.

while on the topic, of clutch linkage i got a question! on the 5.0 did the clutch linkage change to a hydraulic setup meaning no Z bar and such? cause i would like to convert my auto in my mustang to a 5speed, and the only real problem i can think of is clutch setup... and if i can just pull the tranny with flywheel and everything in between and also the clutch pedal/linkage... would it all fit fine in my 66 mustang?

Great information guys...thanks for your help. I won't need to worry about the clutch linkage, I'm planning on putting in the AOD tranny from the 86.

In 80 Ford changed the balance on the 302 so an 80's flywheel will not be balanced right for a 60's small block.

Flywheel from any 79 or older car should work. Trucks use a bigger flywheel. As for the linkage I would try to find a bellhousing for the mechanical lickage stock to a 66Mustang that the 5 speed would bolt to. Then use stock pedal parts. I don't know what's available. Keep asking people, I know its been done, just don't know the details of how

well luckily i just investigated all into this and found that Laurel Mountain Mustang has a kit for doing this, comes with a cable clutch setup, a crossmember, all the sorts of parts for putting the tranny in your 65-73 mustang... the only thing it requires is that you get a tranny, a clutch pedal and use the flywheel and balancer off of a late model 5.0 mustang.... as long as you use both parts, it keeps the balance on the crank.... its reccomended to use the t5 from an 79-93 mustang because they had a shorter inputer shaft, which fits easier into a 66 mustang... so for a 5speed conversion it will cost me $75 for a tranny from the junkyard, $15 for the flywheel and balancer from the junkyard, $680 or so for the kit, and a possible $100 to have my drive shaft cut shorter since the t5 is longer than my c4.. not too bad really for putting a tranny in a car that never had the option of 5 gears

    Thesals,
Please don't take this wrong, I just hate to see someone do extra work. Please do more checking. If yours is a pre 80 302 you can't just put a post 80 flywheel & balancer on it. In 80 Ford lightened the crank & added weight to the balancer & flywheel. This give an overall lighter rotating assembly, ie more horsepower. The cranks are different. There are quite a few Ford facts I'm fuzzy on, but I learned this one the hard way. In the late 80's I put a 71 302 in an 82 5.0 Mustang. I used the factory flywheel and the 71 balancer. It shook bad at an idle, so I put the 82 balancer on it thinking that it had to match the flywheel. I still shook. Finally someone told me about the balance change, I put a flywheel from a 79 Stang on with the 71 balancer. Smooth as silk.

i see... thank you for saving me from my speculation.... i'll check to see if theres a flywheel for my 69 302 that will fit up with the T-5 tranny.... most likely there is one...
