    new engine

ok so apparently I'm getting $2700 back on my tax return, and i decided, sounds like time for a brand new crate motor for my 66 mustang... question is.... what motor ought i go with?? a built 302? a 347 stroker? or should i do a restomod and put in a 4.6L DOHC... ford sells them for $2700 with the 5 speed attached and the wiring harness

Get the 347 or a 351 crate engine.

The 4.6 modular is a good motor, Ford even has the DOHC heads and supercharger available for them. I was looking in the Blue Oval book the other day, would be a killer setup.

I like the FE's in those old 'stangs. It's some work getting the bigger motors in, but it will make 'em run. The modulars aren't bad motors either, but if I was going to stay small block I would probably go with a 351W. Pretty much a straight swap with a 302 and gobs more potential.

see i like the 347 idea for power, but with gas prices getting to 2.67 a gallon, the 4.6 sounds a little better, they can still make a lot of power.... the 351w on the other hand sounds great, but to get one ina 66 mustang, i have to bang the shit out of my shock towers and use custom headers designed for the swap.... and as i hear, getting the spark plugs in and out is a real PAIN in the ass

Got ya on the gas prices, my daily driver is now a Fuji mountain bike!!! All the parts stores deliver, and the UPS truck comes right to the door. I'll save my gas money for the weekends and cruizin. Sals, you might want to check some measurements on that 4.6. They look like they are plenty wide, not sure about the fit in the horse. My Ranchero has no more shock towers, went to a M2 type suspension, lots of room for everything now!!!

4.6 bolts in with some special motor mount brackets.... t5 tranny mounts in with a special crossmember and cutting the drive shaft a few inches shorter.... i'll have to add the cable clutch setup and a clutch pedal as well.... the 4.6 and 5speed conversion kit will run me like $500.... its made by year one, which they did a similar conversion as the big year project for 2004... a 600hp 4.6 dohc and 6speed tranny.... i'm figuring this conversion will be a little more work... but well worth it because of gas prices, and that the engine will be 100% brand new

I'd get the 347 or a 351W. That 4.6 would be different though, no one else would have one. get some tubular A arms and work on that suspension and you'd have a nice retro ride with modern handling and components.

Go 302 with good heads and cam. A 4.6 is a huge motor and its not a bolt in. The 351W would be easier to bolt in then the 4.6. I have seen a 302 and a 4.6 side by side and the 4.6 is a very wide motor. I'm sure you can make it fit but it will be expensive.

year 1 built a 4.6L 6 speed 66 mustang fastback... according to them there was slight modification to the shock towers to make the motor fit, they cut them flat instead of the way the curve out, and put block off plates on them... same thing a thunderbolt kit does... and then motor mounts, radiator and fans, which they sell a kit for..
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

A 4.6 in a '66 Mustang would be about as good as it gets.....

    ford engine

Now a lot of F body guys hates the 5.0's and the Mustang guys hate the F Body's. Me I don't care. A fast car is a fast car. I don't really give a hoot what motor is under a hood as long as it's an american v-8 and it's produced by the same manufacturer that produced the body. Unless it's an kit car and then a chevy is the cheapest route. If it's a ford then by all means put a ford engine in it. Chevy, put a GM motor in it. How many Charger R/T's do you see with a 350 or 5.0?

The 4.6 DOHC would be cool. I was under the impression that these motors were a lot more expensive that that. Last time I looked they were around 6k to 8k. If you can get one for 2700 that is cool. Make sure its not a SOHC. The 4.6 is wide, wider than the old FE motors even.

Have you thought about a 87-93 fuel injected 302. After-market is huge, and the installation would be simpler. I get usually knock down around 23 to 24mpg and can run 10s at the track. Also the 302 is much simpler to work on than the 4.6.

    buts that my .02
