Years ago when Holley first came out with the Economiser carb I put one on my 69 firebird 400 (long gone) I got so much better MPG than the Q-jet I'll bet that carb paid for itself!!! Lost a little top end performance but off the line was brutal..... out of the box!! never did try re-jetting that one!

THAT ECONOMIZER SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD, DO THEY STILL MAKE IT, OR IS IT SOMETHING I SHOULD LOOK FOR ON EBAY?

Edlebrock performer carbs are good. I have a 500 CFM one and my old 2 barrel was not very good but had heaps of low end but I think with the new intake manifold and carb from Edelbrock, the performer series, I am getting better MPG. They come already tuned for your application but I still messed with the idle mixture screws and timing on the motor a bit too and got it running a little better. I still need to fine tune it but I don't know exactly what to do with it or how I know I have the best tune so need to find some local guy to help me out. Edelbrock stuff IMO is more for street motors and a good choice for an everyday driver. Holley is good too but from what I hear they are better for strip cars and for people not caring for gas milage and just performance.

Oh and one more thing. Call Summit or Jegs and see what they recommend and THEN call whatever brand name you go with like Edelbrock and see if they give you the same answer that Summit and Jegs did. I did that to make sure I didn't get 5 different answers and they all told me the same answer which was good. The guys at Summit know just what they are talking about. I never talked to the Jeg's people so not sure about them. They are just as good I am sure.

The QJets are very good carbs for fuel economy. First the Carter was phased out, then they Holley, then the QJet. There is a reason they were phased out in that order. The Carter got the worst milage and had the worst emissions while the QJet had the best milage and lowest emissions. They are the closest thing to mechanical fuel injection in terms of carbs. Their primaries are tiny which makes them excellent for cruising, but they can still flow 750 cfm which gives them good power, too. The power doesn't come on smooth like a Holley which makes them no good for racing when traction is an issue, but it can make all of the torque and hp of a lower end Holley on a street motor.

While we are on the subject... Should I rebuild my Qjet on my 85 C10 or buy a Holley 600CFM then? I have a 305 and will be putting in a 350 in the next few months here soon so whatever carb I have now will go on the 350. Any idea's? I have a friend that says he knows a guy that can rebuild mine and make it work just as good, if not, better than a Holley!
