Crate 302 help
I am having a hard time finding info on my ford racing crate motor(M-6007-B50). It has the short Explorer timing cover and water pump. My problem is with the pulleys, harmonic balancer and flywheel. Zoops makes a pulley kit for it part #6123( Zoops). It looks like the harmonic balancer and crank pulley are a 1 piece unit so I would have to order the harmonic balancer part #E4TZ-6316A. OK....deeply breathing....because I am using a C-4 transmission I am having to order a new flex plate. Ford racing suggested M-6375-E302 which is a 157 tooth with a 10.5" bolt circle. It is 50oz unbalanced per inch(whatever that means....no really what does that mean). To me this sounds like a package that will work but my buddy who is a ford mechanic said if I don't match the flywheel to the rest of the assembly I would get a bad vibration. I am at a loss. Anyone have any experiance with this........PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

Ford changed the balance weights more often than a woman changes her mind. I always get the flywheel/ring gear with the engine if at all possible, but in your case that wasn't feasible. Get hold of a GOOD Ford parts man, and have all your engine numbers with you, and you might get a combo that won't shake itself to death. I've had 302's and 351W's that shook the screws out of the dash in seconds.

Small block ford are externally balanced. This means that the flywheel and (i think) front balancer are "out of balance" In order for the total reciprocating parts of the engine to be in balance, you must use the correct out of balance flywheel and front balancer. Ford used the fifty oz in the later years. You have to make sure that the front balancer is the correct one, assuming that it is unbalanced. Maybe a ford guy could clarify the front balancer question.

I think 86' and later 302's were internally balanced.

what a pain this has turned out to be but I think I have it figured out. Called Total Ford Performance in Cali and Yes it is externally balanced. Thanks for the help guys.

If it has a 50 in/oz flywheel, it will have to have a 50 in/oz harmonic balancer. The older Windsor's are 28 in/oz.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I have been thinking about this same question. When I start my 29 roadster project I will be picking up a reman 351 Windsor short block. I guess I will have to ask the engine rebuilder what flexplate and balancer I need to use, correct?

Yes, I had to talk to a lot of people before I got a good answer. Ron at Total Ford Performance gave me the best answer. If you don't match the unbalanced weight of both the flex plate and balancer the motor will vibrate bad. My 302 and C4 are about ready to be dropped onto my high boy frame and I can tell why people put chevy's in their rides. Don't get me wrong cause nothing but a Ford is good enough for my 32'.
A "skip" = a dumpster.... but he says it's proper english??? Oh.. Okay. Most of us can see the dating site pun, "matching" with an arsonist.. But a "SKIP? How is that a box? It must all be...
