Ford 292 to 302/352 conversion??/
I have a 59 Fairlane that has a 292 Y Block in it. Well actually it did, I pulled it today. I was thinking about updating to a newer engine instead of rebuilding the Y-Block. Can anyone tell me if the 302/351 w block will bolt up to a ford FMX transmission. I have already rebuilt the trans. so I don't wanna change it.
Thanks

yes it will bolt up to the FMX tranny, i have one in my 69 galaxie, you need the later 6bolt bellhousing though, i actually have a few lyin around i'd sell for cheap if you wanted onejust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

I'm looking at a catalog from Hot Rod and Custom Supply (Used to be right here in Cape Coral, moved recently to Michigan)
They have a kit for $ 154 that gives you your motor mounts (bolt in) and instructions how to modify the crossmember to use a C-4 trans. The phone number is 1-800-741-4687 or www.rodncustom.com.
I think this makes a very easy, nice swap, and you pick up power and lose some weight too.
Hope this helps. Don

c-4 is a lighter transmission and looses less HP but the FMX is a tougher tranny and can take much more of a beating... depending on use, a c-4 can be better, but the fmx is great if you just want to cruisejust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

Yeah, I've heard FMX's were really under rated. A freind of mine has built quite a few cars, and he said he has never blown an FMX.
I was just suggesting he look into the motor mount kit from this company, as it would save him a lot of fabricating, and for $ 154 you can't beat it. He could still couple the 302 to the FMX, and save getting a driveshaft built, etc.

As always with 302/351, you're going to have to either find one with the proper balanced ring gear/flex plate, or have one balanced to your particular engine. Don't believe the books at the wreckers as to interchangeability, there are many different balances out there!

69-74 351 to fmx/c6 flexplates match the 28oz balancers and are the same flexplate required on the fmx bellhousing, the c-4 flexplates are smaller and wont make starter contact.just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

OK guys. I bought an 85 carburated 302 this past weekend. I'm not sure what you mean by the balance. Please clarify. I don't wanna have to do this twice because I jump in without asking the right questions.
Thanks
BTW. Thsals, I will contact you about the bell housing as soon as I verify what I have. Thanks.

ok the 85 302 is a 50oz counterbalance engine, the FMX bellhousing requires the larger size 351 flexplate to match up to the starter, if not then you just be cranking air, i spent months trying to fix this problem on my first car.... what you'll want is a 351 50oz counterbalance flexplate.... should be able to find one pretty easy.... and heres a link for that flexplate if you decide to just buy a brand new one.... if not the link will have all the info for finding a used one http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=skuLast edited by thesals; 04-25-2006 at 10:47 AM.
