1964 Galaxie w/5.O
I just purchased a 1964 Galaxie 500. I want to install a 5.0 with a T5 Trans from a 1990 Mustang GT. Has anyone done this? Do I need any special Brackets?

5.0 Galaxie
If your car still has the original engine mounting brackets, they should work fine.
All you need to do for the trans is modify the crossmember and find a mount that is at at good height to aim the tailshaft at the diff.
'64 Galaxie's came with small blocks, so a small block should fit fine.
I prefer FE's myself.Ensure that the path of least resistance is not you...

Plan on swapping the oil pan and pickup for a front sump setup also.

Don't know if the mustang pan (should be a dual sump) will fit, you may have to dig up an original style front sump pan.
If the 64 was not a stick car, you'll need to dig up a peddle assembly. The 64 would use a mechanical clutch linkage and the Mustang unit uses a cable or hydraulic set up so some fabrication will be needed in this area. A driveshaft will also likely have to be built.
If your going to be using the original induction from the Mustang, you'll have to figure out the computer wiring and figure out how to install a fuel pump capable of supporting it. If your planning on changing to a carb, I believe that you'll have to install an electric fuel pump as your 302 dosn't have the provisions for a mechanical pump (this was discussed in a previuos post so you ight check the arcives).
Although I tend to agree with madgringer and would go with a bigger engine (I'm just an old hotrodder at heart, and I hate to see a lot of wasted space in an engine compartment), a lot of these were produced with 289s and made good cruisers. With the 5 spd and the weight of the car, I'd see what gears the rear has, and set it up with about a 3.55 set.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

What motor do you have now in the 64?
If a 289, the motor mounts will work. Not as sure on teh trans mounts, but that shouldn't be too difficult.
the pedals are the same 60-64 galaxie, so yo shold be able to find them. The 302 bellhousing is larger than the 289. not a big deal, but the automatic on the column linkage uses the bellhousing as a pivot point, and that won't work with a 302. Hydraulic clutch would be the easyest way to go, hardest part is mounting the master cyl.
Other comments i agree with - no mech fuel pump boss on 302, buta holley elec pump will work with a carb just fine. If you are keeping the EFI, then you'll probably need 2 lines from tank to engine (feed and return) and have to modify the tank "hatch" to accept teh extra line. Not positive, but i would think you could get a fule pump that puts out enough pressure without having to go to teh hassle of an intank mounted one.
as to computers, many people have put them in old cars. I might be very tempted to go to an alternator and modern regulator if i was a puttin a puter in there.
let us know how it turns out!Chris

Thanks for the input
Thanks for all the help, I'll have to check out the rearend gear. It came from factory with a 289 with a stick trans. Would like to run with a bigger motor but want it fuel injection.

As for your trans swap. I's shake loos the bucks for a Lakewood bell that has the T-5 pattern so you can retain all your original clutch linkage setup to ease the intall. The T-5 uses the same # of input shaft splines as all the other Ford trannies, 10 i believe. The only things you'd have to worry about would be the length of the input shaft into the pilot bushing. Not really a big deal as you can custom make bushings and even "extend" a bushing if the input is too short. If it is short, then the '94-'95 input shaft swapped into your T-5 would help remedy that because it's a tad longer.
I haven't done this or really looked into it, but you might be able to have the current bellhousing drilled and tapped for the T-5's pattern aswell.
Keep in mind that the shifter is non-adjustable and can sometimes be a problem.
For fuel delivery you'll need to have your gas tank modified to accept a high pressure in-tank pump to fuel the FI. Wiring up the computer is not a real big deal. There's plenty of Mustang sites that have this info redily available.
I'll have to agree with screemer though... those big Galaxies were ment to be FE powered.Dan Ouellette

I'm late at posting to this thread, but I have researched this situation for a 66 Mustang C4 to T5 swap. I would try to find someone else that has successfully done this. I know that on my car there were header clearance issues with the cable clutch and that there are issues with the mechanical clutch. These can be worked around. If you plan on installing a power brake booster there can be clearance issues too for the cables or mechanisms coming through the firewall.
Putting an AOD or T5 successfully into these older cars can really make them much more driver friendly especially on a freeway cruise.
Hope your install was a success!

I am late on this too, but hi fellow illinois'n I think you can get some of the conversion parts from mustang resto on irving park road in Bensenville. I helped a guy install a t5 in a 65 stang in place of the the top loader, they make a templete for the bracket to take the clutch fork and pivot out of the old three speed bell and mounts it in the t5 one by drilling and tapping a few holes there is also a company that makes a peice you weld on the top of the clutch pedal and you drill a hole I think 3/4 of inch in the fire wall and you can use the late style firewall adjuster and cable. Hope this help I am local if you some help let me know.like a volvo with gun racks.....

I am thinking about putting a EFI 302 and 5 speed in a 65 galaxie if the car is in decent shape. I think there is someone who makes a spacer to install a five speed using the older bellhousing so the original clutch linkage can be used, dont remember who but they sold mustang parts at the ford swapmeet in columbus ohio. Plumb a new fuel line for supply and use the old one for the return line. You can use the high pressure frame mounted pump from an F-150 with EFI. Do not retain the stock shifter, it's a piece of crap. Spring for an aftermarket shifter with adjustable detents or you will wind up buying new shifter forks and then buying the aftermarket shifter.sixty clicks West of Chu Lai
