    289W & 302W rods

Can someone tell me if 289W & 302W rods are the same length? If not what is the length of both and where is the measurement taken from. What would happen if you put 302W rods in a 289W or is this not possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Be careful when you mix and match Ford parts as noted above. You can do it.....just do your homework. There are different features for various years of blocks.

Start with the block and work out from there. The best smaller block is the 67-70 302 or the mid 85 and up 5.0 is even better if you get the roller cam. The 351 W is good too, but has a higher deck height that can create clearance problems in tight motor compartments.

Give us an Idea what your doing and maybe we can help but we can't have enough information too help you.If your trying to raise you compression,It's easy to go with a early 63 set of 289 HighPerf head's with 47.7 chambers or a pair of 68 302 head's with 52cc's HEY let us know if we can help but gotta have info.

    Vegas,
thanks but I have sorted problem out. I wasn't trying to experiment, it was just a case of having a couple of sets of unmarked 289 & 302 rods and not knowing which is which.
I am putting a 302 together and didn't know how to tell the two apart.
    Thanks
    Geoff

I don't know if you read this book but I always refer back to it for spec's, but this book is just good reading if you like ford's. It's called ford performance, get the revised book. This book help's with a lot of questions.

Raising the compression is a good idea, do your calcs, be careful with running pump gas and watch piston to valve clearance on higher lift cams.

The 302 block has longer piston skirts than the 289. If you wanna stroke it, the 302 is a better block and the newer ones are set up with the roller cams.

1968 to 1972 are the best 302 blocks the newer 85-94 are 30 lbs lighter due to less material also the cranks in the newer blocks are different as well less counterweight 1968 is best it has deeper bores which means less skirt wear along with a higher nikel content

a 302 can be run with 289 rods, be careful though because it will raise the pistons a little higher, best way to compensate would be using dished pistons, but also higher compression is only good to a certain degree, if you raise your compression too high and then decide some day to add a supercharger.... KABOOM, you will see your supercharger come right through your hood and most likely destroy your block...
