292 y-block cam question
I'm ready to put together a new motor, and am not sure about the camshaft nose area. At the outside going inward there is the bolt, lockwasher, thick washer, fairly wide spacer, eccentric and balance.
Does the bolt, lockwasher and thick washer jamb to the spacer, or should there be some clearance? As things are now, my setup is a zero clearance fit. It jambs into the spacer locking up all the hardware up to and including the cam gear. Seems like it pushes the back of the cam gear into the thrust washer that bolts to the block.

Factory calls for .005'' end play. Double check the thrust spacer for the chamfer. It should be facing the cam. If not, it will "lockup" the cam and gear. If it is correct, get back here and see if someone has an idea. What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

The thrust spacer, the one that sits inside the bolted on thrust plate, is correctly oriented (maybe made a mistake above by calling the thrust plate a thrust washer).
I checked, but without a dial gauge, the cam end play and felt like it was at least .005 with everything bolted up, very slight, main indicators were a light click and a change in timing chain slack.
So it sounds like the bolt and washer assembly locks everything in place butting up to that spacer on the end of the cam, still giving a .005 clearance between thrust plate and back of cam gear?Last edited by 46yblock; 05-31-2007 at 10:55 PM.

Thanks Denny and Nitro. The diagram does help! It is the same one I've been studying trying to find a hidden meaning Ha Ha. That second washer in from the cam bolt is approximately 1/4 inch thick, so it must push into the end hardware, since it is such heavy duty?Last edited by 46yblock; 06-01-2007 at 08:39 AM.
