Ignition Timing on a '72 302?
Well, from the name SBC Maro, I know that I probably don't come off as a Ford enthusiast, but I need to ask a question of those who know ford motors like I know chevys.
My friend has a '67 Mustang with a '72 302 in it. He helped me put together my '70 Nova, so I'm trying to return the favor by helping him out in his baby.
Can someone help me out with this ignition timing? The balancer has a notch which I assume is the TDC mark, but where is that in referance to? On my Chevy 355 it's a similar deal, but I have the timing tag on the timing cover that references from 20BTDC to 20ATDC.
If I can find out where the notch in the balancer is supposed to be at #1TDC, I think we can handle the rest.
Thanks guys!

Ford's have a timing pointer too. Can't remember which one a '67 has but timing is done the same way as a chebbie.....except the distributor is easier to reach and lock down when you're done!!! For the exact specs, take a look at a Chilton's manual. Any idea if it is still the original engine?Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Ok, the Summit Tech was convinced that Timing tags were chebbie exclusive. Wouldn't be the first time I've been led astray by them though (.530 lift cam in a stock 305......)

I think you'll find the information and instructions in a Chilton's manual to be much more accurate then some clown working the phone bank!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Amen to that, Dave. It's like just because he answers the phone, don't instantly believe he has all that much knowledge. All the 289's and 302's I've ever owned had timing tabs next to the balancer. The 85 302 HO had a port ont the tab for an fancier timing device. Oldtimerz stricks, I can't remember the name of it.Last edited by Oldf100fordman; 07-13-2007 at 07:22 PM.
