I think its 1/4 might be 5/16
If the driver rod is already in the engine it has a star washer on it to hold it there and you will need a 1/4 or 5/16 quarter drive socket to turn it you can chuch a 1/4 extension in a 1/2 drill---on Fords turns counter clockwise----

I have always used a deep craftsman socket on other Fords and it fits in the hole with no grinding. I tape it to the extension.

289's and 302's are 1/4", 351W's are 5/16". Mine are store bought primer rods, had em for awhile, think when I got them they were about $10.00 each....which I suppose means now they're about $200.00!!!!!!
The socket thing works great, too. Always used that method till I found the primer rods I have now for cheap....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Dave speedway has them for about $14 not to bad for a el cheepo . The local mom and pops dont stock any thought they would at least have a chevy laying around . I did waste a 12 inch wood bore bit for the shaft but oh well will have it for the next engine in the hotrod .

I made one for my 302 out of an old screwdriver with a removable tip and a broken handle. I broke off the rest of the handle and the shaft fit in my drill just fine. The 1/4 hex was already built into the other end. Works great.

I took an old distributor and ground the teeth off of the cam end so it doesn't engage it anymore. Only required driving out the roll pin at the bottom and 10 minutes on a bench grinder. I also rounded off the top where the rotor normally goes so my 1/2 inch drill goes over it.
