Hmmmm. believe there's about half a zillion guys running 5.0 Mustangs that would differ with you opinion. Just like the big blocks, it's nothing but a go-round-in-circles argument....
Plain facts, the 5.0 Ford has been in production many years more then the 302 Chevy.... If you wanna compare them, then just make sure you compare apples to apples and not the Z-28 version to a 302 in your Granma's Galaxie....
Both engines can be built to put out some great horsepower numbers, depends a whole lot on preference....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Well I really think the Chevy DZ 302 Engine is a great GM Build . But in all fairness compare it to Ford's Boss 302 that Engine is just as good .

and then they quit building it....must of been not as successful financially as the little Ford.... Ford did win it's share in Trans Am and SCCA racing. Not even necessary to say how wildly successful the small Fords were in the Cobras...and the GT-40's the year they dominated LeMans.... I was fortunate enough to be around a couple different B-production SCCA teams that were running Mustangs, and even one IMCA car running a Boss 302 with some very trick (for their day) high port exhaust Clevleand heads that Gapp & Roush put out.
The Chevy parts in general are a bit cheaper, but not to the extent they were years back.
If the 302 was as good as some would have you believe it was, why is it that it had such a short lifespan in the Chevy engine options? Often wondered what it was that killed the engine being a production item from Chevy????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

"Better" is a very subjective term when you compare these two engines. The Chevy guys are of course going to favor the Z28 motor, and the Blue Oval camp is going to give you 1,000 reasons why theirs is better.
My opinion is that they are both very good engines, but in their base form very different. The 302 Chevy was purpose built to qualify Chevy for Trans Am racing, but produced in somewhat limited numbers. On the other hand, Ford has produced a zillion 302 Ford engines in everything from low performance cars and trucks all the way up to the 5.0 Mustang version that few can argue runs like a scalded cat right out of the box.
I think the 302 Ford is better from the standpoint of the average rodder being able to find the parts to put one together. I bet 302 Chevy parts are a bit pricey today, whereas Ford parts are everywhere and fairly reasonable. However, asking which one is "better" is like asking your preference of a Blonde, Brunette, or Redhead.............all of them have their pluses and minuses, but they are all good.

I think Chevy killed the 302 because of power and drivability. It was only rated at 290 and you had to twist it to get that. A 70 1/2 Z28, now there's a Camero. I'd take one of those over a 67-8-9 any day.
Fords, well I see 302 'stangs running in the 10s.
I think the bigesst issue between sbc and sbf has always been heads. ford just can't get their head out of their posterior and make some heads that will flow like chevys. That from a Ford guy.

the 302 chevy was rated at 290 horsepower at 5500 rpm, granted you may of had to twist em up to get moving but who cares thats the half the fun, look at what the z-28 302 camaros bring on the auction block.
the ford 302 is like chevys 350 it was fords mainstay for years.

Its really no contest ,with factory forged pistons and a roller cam ,the new 86 to 94 302 is a hands down winner.
200000 miles is nothing for the new 302,mine still roasts the tires and passes the strictest emmisions in the country at 189000......its a 1986 .Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)
