1971 Comet...need help
I picked up a 71 Comet with a 302 2v and 48K original miles. (It sat for 20 + years) So far I've changed out the: Fuel filter, plugs, wires, coil, condensor, point, pcv valve...I think that's it.
She 'pops' sucks up fuel, and burns rich.
I don't know if it's the:
1) Timing
2) Valves needing adjusting
3) Carb needs adjusting
Needless to say, I don't know how to do any of these things proficiantly, or if it's even the problem. Any advice would be helpful...especial since its now my daily driver.
I could use some help.
Thanks!
Chris

after setting for 20+years i would rebuld the carb. it's a 2100 autolite 2-barrel. the accel pump is probley cracked or dry cracked.also did you drain the fuel tank and flush the fuel lines??? go with adjusting the carb.and since its a ford rebuild the brakes total brake job ,they may not be bad now but real soon they will be. check for vaccum leaks. get a can of carb. cleaner with the engine idleing spray around the carb.,intake, pcv valve and hoses, and carb.base plate. good luck.

Yep, all the above. Do not try to run on the fuel tank, go get some clean gas in a 5 gallon can (after you do all the things suggested) and run a line from the fuel pump to the can of gas and draw from there. Your stock tank is full of gum, rust and trash.
A while back I bought an 84 Ford that had only 50,000 miles on it but the old lady who owned it parked it in the garage for 4 years and didn't start it. When I dropped the fuel tank it was as if someone had dumped 5 lbs of powdered rust in there. I had to replace the tank and clean out the entire fuel system after I got it running on a separate tank. You might get by with having a radiator shop boil out your tank and maybe put sloshing liquid in it to coat the interior.
You might want to pull the valve covers (the stock gaskets are probably brittle and falling apart anyway) and have someone crank it to see if all the valves are moving ok. A valve might be hung up in a guide. 20 years of sitting can do some strange things to a motor.
Oh, and welcome to the forum.

I'd go with a rebuild. Soak all the little parts in a good can of solvent - pay attention to the venturi cluster assembly (#32 below).
Good Luck!
