    Question Engine Decisions

I have a 64 galaxie 500 with a 6 cyl and a c-4 trans. I planned on putting a 390 with c-6, but i am now thinking would it be worth it rebuilding the 6 cyl?? I will eventually put the 390 and c-6 but dont have the money right now to do it the way i want. Can anyone give me advice on wat to do.. Also will my tranny bolt up to a 390?
    Tans #C4AP 7A040 C-BK
    Engine #C3AA-6015 AC
If anyone knows wat the specs are let me know please....thx

    NEWBIE!!!!!!!!!lol

Properly building any engine can be a pricey proposition. Once your 6 is rebuilt your going to be pretty much married to it for a while.

If the car is complete and runs, I think I would leave it that way while your collecting the parts to build it the way you want. The money you put in the 6 can go a long way in your conversion to a 390.

While the tranny will fit behind the 390, you will need a proper bellhousing, flywheel and likely bigger clutch and pressure plate (what you spend on these will go a long way towards your C6). THere is also the question of how long it will live, as the 6 cyl units were generally lighter than the V8 one.

Those ford 6 cylinders engines had alot of good points.Alot of torque and you could bore it out to .080 or larger. I had one that had a small 390 holly carb and I split the manifold for dual exhaust and it went and sounder like a V-8 That was the 300 CI engine.

in my opinion it depends what 6 you got, if U got a straight, then hell stick with that, if its a v6 i'd prolly go with the big block seein that those galaxie's are heavy cars..... my 289 pushes my galaxie very nicely, but a straight 6 can actually be faster than a small block v8

I agree with Mike P, if the car runs fine now leave it until you have the money and parts to do what you want with it. Why spend more money building your V6 when you really want a V8. by doing one then the other you are just wasting money that would go into putting the 390 in. Makes sense doesn't it? Plus, once you have finished the V6 you would most likely not be wanting to do an entire engine rebuild anytime soon after, again.

That's how i look at it.

A lot of straight 6s last for a good long time. If it pushes your car now, and your under 200000 miles, it will be there for a while. Take your time, find the engine you want, and then put it in. Till then, a bottle of slick 50 every 3rd oil change and a tune up, then let the 6 do its job.
