best way to tweak a 351w FI motor
I am dropping a 1990 351w with Fuel Injection into a 77 ford pick-up. I know that my options become limited by going with FI instead of carburetion, but I want this vehicle to be a good daily runner even in 20 below weather. Does anyone have any tips to increase this engines horsepower. I am realy making a work truck (3/4 ton 4by) and I dont want it to be dead. Should I look for any specific heads from a 302,351w different year?, What kind of cam can I run with a FI system? Any suggestions?, Thanks.Last edited by truksrawsum; 04-12-2004 at 08:54 AM.

man with gas prices i would stay stock. that type of FI u should have plenty of pwr and driveability with out any modifications just keep all the engine electrical devices intact and u will have a good set up for every day driving . as far as engine mods look for a 4v 302 or 4v 351w those r hard to find but if u find one thats the ticket as far as heads go 4v is 4barell and the windsor u have now is 2v thats 2 barell . when u go up to a 4v engine thats where performance comes in as far as stock . look for old police cars in the junk yard thats what we had to do to get a engine that had a 4v set up .

Look for a 93 -95 F-150 Lightning engine. The heads are for the 351 are GT-40 and the upper and lower intake are for the GT-40 also they are totally different from stock 351 302 stuff. The cam on the other hand I would look for the same one for the lightning or go with a motorsport b-303 or e-303. I have a stock 93 Cobra cam and a B-303 cam both are used. You can use either of they in your motor with good bottom end and power with out changing the intake. If you get a new head and intake you will have to go up or injectors to 24lbs or so. The lighning runs all of this. You can also bump your timing up to 12 or 14 degrees no more than that then put your TPS sensor voltage up to .90 to .95 that will help on the pick up of the motor. I have a 93 Lighning the I dirve all the time it gets close to 16 mpg on the hwy and 12 or so in town 4.11 gears are the reason. The truck ran a 13.5 1/4 with nothing more than a straight pipe exhaust with cats.
If you need any other help let me know.
When you set the TPS you have to do it a specific way or your truck will not idle properly.

Your option only become limited to your knowledge of the items you are working with. Alot of people don't like to work on FI engines because of all the computer stuff, but the computer tell you what is wrong with it on it's own. It take alot of learning to get it all right.
