Edelbrock dual quad intake
Who out there has any experience with the Edelbrock dual quad intake #5435 for the 289-302 Ford?
I bet it looks gorgeous on the Ford, and I realize it's overkill for the size of motor. Mostly, I'm looking at it from a "bragging rights" aspect along with the visual appeal, but I'd like the motor to run decent, too. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used it, which carbs & cam you used, etc. etc.
I understand that there are many other factors (car weight, tranny, rear gear, etc.) that determine a more exact setup, but all I'm looking for here is just to hear other people's experiences with this intake.

for this setup really the two things you need to look at is the cam and the heads, the cam should at least be a little more high performance than the stock cam, even though i prefer a roller setup, and the heads need to be at least for a 4bbl setup, even though edelbrock makes high performance heads that would work much better with it.....i run on my 302 a triple duece setup.... with the carbs, sine you probably wont be running high performance heads, will need to stick around 600-650 cfm, you dont want too powerful of carbs or else you'll just bog your engine, also 1 idea would be to use a quadrajet for your primary carb, that way you save more fuel until you put your foot into it, also an oversize bore and a good ignition will help with handling larger amounts of fuel

Thanks for the reply. Edelbrock recommends either the performer plus cam (for torque) or the torquer plus cam (high rpms). I haven't decided which way to go yet.....although it looks like a dual plane intake? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I was looking at 500 cfm carburetors with Edelbrock's progressive linkage. That's still a bunch of cfm's for a little 302, but I can't resist the dual quad idea. As for heads, I didn't think there was a specific factory head for either 2 barrel or 4 barrel carbs (like Cleveland heads are specific to 2 & 4 barrel). Do you mean an aftermarket head that flows better? The engine I'm considering is out of a 1982 Mustang GT. Factory 2 barrel with a "marine" grind cam (that's how the GT was in '82). I was going to stick with the stock crank, rods (coditioning as necessary for high perf), heads, forged or similar pistons (around 9:1 compression) good ignition, roller rockers, and a timing gear drive. Job one on this engine will be building for dependability, the 2nd consideration will be power, and third will be the look (thus the dual quads). The one limitation I'm putting on myself is to use as many stock parts that I think won't compromise the dependability or power too much, mostly due to cost considerations. I'm trading better heads and forged crank/rods for better pistons, more carbs, and a gear drive. I guess I can upgrade things later, but I'm excited about the plans thus far.--Doug

Doug Have you considered a pair of 390CFM Holly's. With what you going to do, they might work for you. I was going to put them on my 305 which was bored .060 over with a mod. cam, etc. but I went with a 600CFM edelbrock carb and dual plane manifold. I am now going to put 3 dueces on it and just run the center one until I kick it to WOT and then the other two will kick in.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

yeah, 3 dueces is ussually the way to go over the dual quads, for smallblock fords i know theres a guy that sells a setup that is a holley manifold with 3 holley 2bbl carbs and all the linkage for $1200, which is a pretty nice deal seeing that its all new.... I'll find the add for you if U want me to.... and also, with that gear drive, if its not one of the quite ones.... dont be planning on driving too late at nite..... those things are really loud... got one in my rambler

As for the gear drive, I'd only consider the "quiet" drive because I'd be getting it for the reliability, not the noise. Thanks for your input on both items!!!--Doug

Doug The holly 390 are small 4 barrel carbs. Some people have good luck with them other don't as they are hard to tune. As far as 3 dueces thereare plenty of manufactures of these. I just bought one on E-Bay with 3 rochester carbs off a mid 60 SBC. After I rebuild them, they will work great.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

the only problem with using the 390 holley's on the edelbrock dual quad intake is that the intake was only designed to use the edelbrock/carter style carbs. the holley's wont fit. one of the ford mags put an edelbrock dual quad intake with two 500's on a stock 84 mustang 5.0 a number of years ago, and reported that the settup was very good overall. the progressive linkage was smooth, throttle response was good, and fuel economy was pretty good also. i dont recall what the downside was, but it was insignificant.a man's fate is a man's fate
