232 6 cyl for 302 8 cyl swap
I have a Fairlane with a 232 "mileage maker 6" and I would like to put a 302 into it . Does anyone here have any experience with this. Will it bolt right in or would I have to modify some things. I'm new to this so bear with me.
thanks

I think the frames are similar to the 63 and 64 galaxies and you might want to find a set of 289 motor mounts for a 63/4 galaxie and see if you can bolt in a 302 in your 59,if you cant find any a local rod shop sells mount kits for you application. After you get the motor in it should only require a little tweaking to hook everything up and if yours has a manual trans you will have to find a mid 60s and up trans as the early 60s on back have a different bolt pattern where it bolts to the bellhousing. If you dont want to wire in a altenator all you will need to find is a 63/4 generator brakets from a galaxie with a 289 and your generator will bolt up.

the bellhousings changed in 68 with the intro of the 302 - so all 302's are the new bolt pattern - - it is a larger bellhosing so yo will also need a larger flywheel (probably already on the 302)
289 and 302 motor mounts are the same - i put a 302 in a 63 galaxie and found out all this stuff the hard way! Never tried to replace a 6 with an 8, so i don't know, but would suspect that the six has different mounts.
you could try searching for van conversions - the fist gen econolines came wit a 6 only and putting an 8 in them was popular a while back - if you can find a web site about it you will see what all you need.Chris

You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
